Job Title: Phlebotomist II
Job Description
The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality specimen collection and handling in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. This position assists with blood and other specimen collection, troubleshooting workflow issues, training team members, and recommending process improvements to ensure accurate, efficient, and safe laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens in accordance with established procedures and test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders while maintaining specimen integrity.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain appropriate temperature and handling conditions.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow detailed procedures and protocols for specimen transport to preserve the quality and integrity of samples.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety standards.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe work area.
- Update patient information accurately in laboratory or hospital systems.
- Attend annual department trainings and stay current on policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to internal stakeholders to satisfy inquiries.
- Participate in troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen processing.
- Assist with training and mentoring team members in proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in phlebotomy, including work with pediatric and geriatric patient populations.
- Proficiency in performing blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Strong ability to collect and handle specimens (blood, urine, fecal, and other types) according to established protocols.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and basic reporting.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Overall 2–4 years of relevant experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and labels.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in labeling, data entry, and test requisition verification.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safe work practices.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly to patients and respond to inquiries.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced setting while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with diverse patient populations, including pediatrics and geriatrics.
- Comfort with answering telephone calls and communicating laboratory results to appropriate parties in a clear and professional manner.
- Ability to participate in training and mentoring colleagues on phlebotomy techniques and workflow best practices.
- Experience with specimen centrifugation, splitting, and freezing according to test protocols.
- Familiarity with updating patient information in electronic systems and maintaining accurate records.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow complex protocols for specimen transport and storage.
- Commitment to ongoing learning through annual departmental trainings and adherence to updated procedures.

Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Walnut Creek, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
