Job Description:
We are seeking a skilled Field Service Technician / Electrical Apparatus Testing Technician to support the testing, maintenance, and commissioning of power system equipment across substations, utilities, and industrial facilities. This position requires hands-on experience with electrical apparatus testing (beyond standard electrician work) and the ability to work safely in energized or partially energized environments.
The ideal candidate will be capable of independently performing testing and diagnostics on a variety of high-voltage and substation equipment while adhering to strict safety protocols. This role supports both greenfield and brownfield projects at various stages of energization and plays a critical part in ensuring system reliability and performance.
Responsibilities:
- Perform testing, inspection, maintenance, and commissioning of electrical power system equipment, including:
- Circuit breakers (low, medium, and high voltage)
- Transformers (pad-mounted and power)
- Current transformers (CTs) and potential transformers (PTs)
- Substation equipment
- Power cables (low, medium, and high voltage)
- Ground grid systems
- Oil sampling and diagnostics
- Conduct field testing and troubleshooting of electrical systems
- Interpret and work within three-phase electrical systems
- Execute Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and adhere to all safety requirements
- Work in energized and partially energized substations safely and effectively
- Document test results and provide detailed reports
- Support commissioning activities and ensure equipment meets operational standards
- Travel to job sites throughout Colorado and occasionally out of state
- Collaborate with project teams to meet project schedules and deliver high-quality results
Work Environment / Schedule / Location:
- Location: Based in Denver or Colorado Springs, CO (preferred)
- Field-based role in substations, utility sites, and industrial facilities
- Exposure to energized and non-energized environments
- Work in both greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization
- Frequent travel within Colorado (typically ≤2 weeks at a time)
- Occasional out-of-state travel may be required
- Project-based field work with potential for extended or variable hours depending on site requirements
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with electrical apparatus testing (not limited to general electrical work)
- Strong experience with one or more of the following:
- Breakers, transformers, CTs/PTs
- Cable testing
- Substation equipment
- Ability to safely work in energized or partially energized substations
- Knowledge of three-phase electrical systems
- Familiarity with LOTO procedures and safety standards
- Willingness to travel for field assignments
Preferred Qualifications
- ~5+ years of electrical apparatus testing experience
- NETA or NICET certifications (may offset years of experience)
- Experience with:
- Relay testing
- Power systems commissioning
- Electrical system troubleshooting
- Oil sampling and diagnostics
- Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills
Additional Considerations
- Strong candidates with slightly less experience but solid technical skillsets will be considered
- Candidates located outside the immediate area may be considered with relocation support

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Denver, CO.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $60.00/hr.
