Job Title: Sample Receiving Technician
Job Description
The Sample Receiving Technician supports a high-volume environmental laboratory by receiving, logging, and routing environmental samples such as soil, water, and air. This role ensures that all samples are accurately documented, properly labeled, and delivered to the appropriate laboratory departments in accordance with established procedures, regulatory requirements, and safety standards. It is an excellent entry-level opportunity for individuals interested in building a career in laboratory operations or progressing into analytical testing roles.
Responsibilities
- Receive and unload incoming coolers and consignments of environmental samples in accordance with DOT regulations.
- Verify incoming samples against the Chain of Custody (COC), match them to corresponding quotes, and document any discrepancies daily.
- Review COCs to ensure they are accurate, complete, and correct, and work to resolve any issues or missing information.
- Log samples into the Laboratory Management System daily, assign lot numbers for tracking, and distribute associated paperwork to project managers.
- Label samples clearly with assigned lot numbers and deliver them to the appropriate laboratory departments for analysis each day.
- Prepare bottle kits daily for clients to collect samples, pack bottles and coolers, and ensure all kits comply with established procedures, including EPA and DOT requirements.
- Forward samples to other laboratories when required for tests not performed on-site, following DOT regulations for shipping.
- Dispose of spent samples, waste, and other potentially hazardous materials according to established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Monitor freezer and cooler temperatures daily to ensure readings remain within SOP guidelines and document any deviations as needed.
- Clean and organize the Sample Receiving Department daily to maintain a clean, safe work environment and support efficient workflow.
- Maintain and promote safety by conducting all operations in a safe and environmentally compliant manner.
- Stock supplies and maintain inventory levels daily to ensure sufficient materials are available for sample receiving and preparation tasks.
- Perform sample splits and composites as requested to support laboratory testing requirements.
- Perform courier duties as needed to support laboratory and client needs, including transporting samples and materials.
- Assist in the maintenance and organization of walk-in coolers to facilitate quick and accurate sample retrieval.
- Ship empty coolers back to clients and other laboratories, and log all outgoing coolers to maintain a detailed inventory.
- Interact with clients and couriers in a professional manner when receiving samples, completing COC forms, and answering basic questions.
- Scan COC forms and samples into the system, track multiple samples simultaneously, and ensure accurate documentation of all received materials.
- Manage the supply room and inventory, including packing bottles and coolers for outgoing shipments and maintaining orderly storage.
- Participate in uncapped overtime opportunities, with approval, to support organization, waste disposal, and sample disposal tasks before shifts or on weekends.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by local leadership to support overall laboratory operations and client service.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship.
- Professional working proficiency in English, including the ability to read, write, and speak in English.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, including full coolers of samples, on a regular basis.
- Ability to stand at a workstation for extended periods, bend, and walk into refrigerated storage rooms.
- Basic computer skills to log samples, scan documents, and use a Laboratory Management System.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail to manage multiple samples and documentation accurately.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with clients, couriers, and internal teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating self-motivation and adaptability.
- Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and keep accurate records.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and comply with company policies, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, production-based environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in chemistry, wet chemistry, or sample preparation is beneficial.
- Experience with sample intake, sample receiving, and logging samples into laboratory or quality systems is an advantage.
- Familiarity with SOPs and quality control practices in a laboratory or production environment.
- Experience in laboratory, environmental testing, or similar operational settings is helpful.
- Background in fast-paced roles such as restaurants or food service can be valuable, especially for candidates used to working on their feet and managing multiple tasks.
- Detail-oriented mindset with strong critical thinking skills and the willingness to ask questions when unsure.
- Calm, professional demeanor with the ability to work effectively under deadlines and project-driven workloads.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to build good working relationships with team members.
- Interest in career progression into laboratory analysis and instrumentation or in building a long-term career within sample receiving.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wheat Ridge, CO.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
