Job Description

Assist in surgical and invasive procedures by preparing and providing sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment. Maintain a sterile field and proactively meet the needs of the surgical team.


Responsibilities

  • Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures.
  • Protect the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.
  • Demonstrate safe operation of equipment and machinery and follow procedures for reporting and correcting unsafe situations.
  • Perform accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items.
  • Speak up with safety concerns and act as the patient’s advocate.
  • Handle specimens according to facility policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to standard precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Perform interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
  • Perform interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection.
  • Assemble supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
  • Prepare and organize sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure.
  • Provide instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure.
  • Protect the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
  • Maintain a fire-safe environment.
  • Practice and monitor aseptic technique.
  • Comply with Universal Protocol and facility site validation and time-out policy.
  • Maintain radiation safety at all times in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination areas.
  • Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
  • Provide hand-off reports to other teammates that are accurate, concise, and pertinent to the patient’s condition and response to care.
  • Document episodes of care accurately, timely, completely, and legibly.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with post-procedure cleaning of the surgical area.

Essential Skills

  • Sterilization techniques
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist Program preferred
  • Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred
  • Current Surgical Technologist certification preferred
  • Completion of BCLS Course within 90 days of employment or proof of current BCLS certification
