Job Description
The Lead Superintendent of Construction will oversee a large, ground-up public K–12 school project in the Hartford area from early site work through final closeout. This role suits a seasoned field leader who takes full ownership of site operations, makes decisive field-level decisions, and successfully delivers complex institutional projects without relying on heavy corporate oversight. The project is a multi-year, high-visibility public elementary school build delivered by a lean team that emphasizes accountability, collaboration, and strong field leadership.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary on-site leader responsible for day-to-day construction operations from initial civil and site work through project closeout.
- Plan, coordinate, and direct the work of subcontractors, inspectors, suppliers, and utility providers to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution.
- Lead pre-installation and coordination meetings, ensuring scopes are fully reviewed and that constructability, logistics, and quality control requirements are clearly defined and understood.
- Develop and maintain the project sequence of work to meet schedule milestones, proactively identifying and mitigating risks that could impact schedule or budget.
- Enforce all job-site safety requirements, uphold OSHA standards, and promote a strong, proactive safety culture among all project stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with the Project Manager and senior leadership on planning, scheduling, and project strategy while operating independently in the field.
- Drive accountability across trade partners and internal staff, ensuring commitments, deadlines, and quality standards are consistently met.
- Use construction technology tools such as Procore, digital plans, tablets, and iPads for documentation, reporting, communication, and issue tracking.
- Oversee and enforce project quality control standards, ensuring the work meets or exceeds high-performance public building requirements.
- Coordinate effectively with architects, engineers, owner and client representatives, and state representatives to resolve field issues and maintain alignment with project goals.
- Lead and mentor assistant superintendents, project engineers, and other field staff, providing guidance, feedback, and support to develop their capabilities.
- Support civil and site work activities, including coordination of foundations, steel erection, building envelope, and interior build-out.
- Maintain clear, professional communication with all stakeholders regarding progress, challenges, and changes, and support timely and accurate project documentation.
- 10+ years of experience as a Superintendent overseeing commercial construction projects.
- Proven track record delivering ground-up construction projects from site work through closeout.
- Experience managing large-scale public or municipal projects, with prior K–12 school project experience strongly preferred.
- 15+ years of experience as a Superintendent on large public ground-up projects valued at approximately $50 million or more.
- Demonstrated expertise in subcontractor management and coordination across multiple trades.
- Strong capability in civil and site work, including foundations, utilities, and site development.
- Proficiency with Procore construction management software for documentation, coordination, and reporting.
- Ability to effectively use an iPad and digital plans for field management and communication.
- OSHA 30 certification and deep familiarity with enforcing job-site safety requirements.
- Strong quality control experience on commercial or institutional projects.
- Comfort working directly with and leading coordination among subcontractors, designers and architects, owner and client representatives, and state representatives.
- Ability to operate independently in the field while maintaining close collaboration with project management and leadership.
- Decisive leadership style with the ability to make sound field decisions under time and schedule pressures.
- Extensive experience with public, municipal, or K–12 school construction projects.
- Background managing high-performance public building projects with elevated standards for quality and performance.
- Experience leading large, complex projects with lean core teams, typically 3–4 key staff members.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a non-bureaucratic, performance-driven environment focused on results and accountability.
- Strong preference for professionals who value ownership, realistic expectations, and long-term project success over frequent job changes.
- Ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with architects, engineers, owners, and trade partners.
- Proven capability to mentor and develop assistant superintendents and project engineers.
- A stable work history that reflects long-term commitment to major projects and organizations.
