Job Title: Staff Accountant
Job Description
This on-site Staff Accountant role offers the opportunity to join a fast-growing, family-owned organization with significant potential for internal growth into a higher Accountant position. You will play a key role in the month-end close process, financial reporting, and maintaining strong internal controls across multiple branches and locations. The position requires a solid understanding of accounting principles and US GAAP, strong data analysis capabilities, and the ability to collaborate with operational teams to ensure accurate and timely financial information.
Responsibilities
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities and support the preparation of financial statements.
- Prepare journal entries and accruals, and review account reconciliations for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain fixed asset schedules and lease accounting records in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Review general ledger accounts regularly to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper classification.
- Monitor and maintain internal controls across multiple locations, including controls over cash, inventory, and financial reporting.
- Partner with operational teams to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and to support business decision-making.
- Support external audit requests by preparing schedules, providing documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for process improvements.
- Identify, recommend, and help implement process improvements and efficiencies within the accounting function.
- Build and maintain Excel-based financial models to support reporting, analysis, and forecasting needs.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of accounting experience in a professional setting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and technical accounting concepts.
- Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
- Experience supporting month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Proficiency in financial reporting and preparation of supporting documentation.
- Experience with ERP systems, with NetSuite preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills, including building and maintaining complex financial models.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and identify issues.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all accounting work.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and support internal controls across locations, particularly related to cash, inventory, and reporting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Public accounting experience is a plus.
- Experience working in multi-location environments is preferred.
- Experience with inventory accounting and fixed asset accounting.
- Exposure to external audits, including preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with operational and cross-functional teams.
- Organizational skills that support managing multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously.
- Willingness to contribute across the accounting function and support various projects as needed.
- Desire and motivation to grow into a higher Accountant role within a fast-growing organization.
Work Environment
This is a fully on-site position with standard working hours of approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The role is based in a multi-location environment where you will collaborate closely with both accounting and operational teams. You will work extensively with an ERP system (with NetSuite preferred) and advanced Excel tools to manage general ledger activities, financial reporting, and data analysis. The company operates in a fast-growing, family-owned setting that emphasizes internal growth, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The environment is deadline-driven, especially around month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close cycles, and supports a professional office dress code appropriate for a corporate accounting setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Haven, CT.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $31.25 - $36.06/hr.
