Job Title: Medical Assistant


Job Description

The Medical Assistant performs a blend of clinical and administrative duties within an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or registered nurse. Responsibilities include venipuncture, measurement and documentation of vital signs, assisting providers with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.


Responsibilities

  • Assist providers with patient preparation and education during examinations.
  • Support clinical care team members to ensure optimal patient flow.
  • Manage variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the day.
  • Provide clerical support and act as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members as needed.
  • Participate in daily team huddles to prepare for scheduled patient visits.
  • Screen all patients for preventive care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and potential fall risk.
  • Conduct motivational interviews for patient screening and coaching on disease management.
  • Identify potential behavioral health needs using appropriate screening tools and notify providers.
  • Document clinically related activities accurately in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Perform required patient follow-up including pap smears, Pb levels, HIV, mammograms, and STD screenings.
  • Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document in applicable forms/records.

Essential Skills

  • Must have CMA or RMA certification.
  • Proficiency in medical assisting and patient care.
  • Experience with electronic health records.
  • Ability to perform manual blood pressure measurements.
  • 1-2 years of experience as a Medical Assistant required.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with EMR systems preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of phlebotomy.

Work Environment

This role is based in an ambulatory care center within the hospital, specifically in the Vascular Surgery and Cardiac Centers. One Medical Assistant will work in the south tower and another in the north tower. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm. The position involves a busy work environment, with expectations to manage roughly 70-100 patients in Vascular and over 200 in Cardiac. Candidates should be prepared to be on their feet throughout the workday.
