Job Description

The primary function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The position requires the ability to collect and store specimens according to established procedures while maintaining a high standard of care and patient interaction.


Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
  • Conduct decontamination procedures and update patient information as necessary.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, ensuring correct storage temperatures and procedures.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results to inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required.
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of experience in the field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Knowledge of phlebotomy, blood draw, and specimen collection.
  • Experience with butterfly needles and laboratory procedures.
  • Familiarity with medical, pediatric, and geriatric healthcare settings.

Work Environment

This position operates in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting, requiring adherence to health and safety regulations. The work involves using standard laboratory equipment and technologies, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of specimens during transport and storage.
