Entry-Level Engineer – Lighting Design Engineer (Customer-Facing Role)
Overview
We are seeking an Entry-Level Engineer to support a utility lighting department serving operations centers along the west coast of Florida. This is a customer-facing design role where you’ll manage lighting work orders from assignment through completion, ensuring high-quality service and efficient project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary point of contact for customers throughout the lifecycle of assigned lighting projects
- Communicate with customers via phone, email, and in person
- Conduct site visits to verify field conditions and review project requests with customers
- Review and confirm billing information prior to design initiation
- Develop and input complete lighting designs to move work orders forward
- Present proposals, contracts, and Contribution In Aid of Construction (CIAC) costs to customers
- Maintain accurate records of all customer interactions within Maximo
- Provide proactive status updates and maintain strong customer relationships
- Prepare permit packages and complete required documentation, including locate and outage information
- Stake future installation locations (e.g., poles, pedestals)
- Maintain accurate project timelines, including target start and completion dates
- Ensure cost-effective design solutions and minimize the need for rework or adjustments
Required Skills
Design and engineering fundamentals
- Electrical engineering knowledge
- Distribution and power system design
- Lighting design principles
- Proficiency or familiarity with tools such as MicroStation
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Engineering (from an accredited four-year university)
- Understanding of basic engineering theories, principles, and problem-solving approaches
- Ability to evaluate alternatives and make sound recommendations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to work with diverse populations across various backgrounds
- Detail-oriented with strong data management capabilities
Preferred Qualifications
EIT certification or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Basic understanding of project management principles
- Experience in the electric utility industry
- Knowledge of primary and secondary distribution systems and utility standards
- Familiarity with design software such as Maximo, Smallworld, Bentley Open Utility Designer, or MicroStation
- Lighting design or engineering experience
- General construction knowledge and aptitude

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Clearwater, FL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $27.00/hr.
