Business Development Manager
Job Description
This role leads the growth of a Florida-based electrical power construction operation by identifying and securing new business opportunities, deepening relationships with key utility and data center clients, and supporting the pursuit of complex electrical infrastructure projects. The Business Development Manager collaborates closely with estimating, operations, and engineering teams to develop compelling proposals, shape go-to-market strategies, and provide strategic insights into market trends, customer needs, and competitor positioning. The position focuses on expanding the client base across utilities, cooperatives, and private power providers while ensuring revenue and margin targets are achieved.
Responsibilities
- Identify, qualify, and pursue new business opportunities in the electrical power construction sector, with a focus on transmission, distribution, and substation projects.
- Build, nurture, and maintain strong relationships with utilities, electrical membership cooperatives (EMCs), municipal and cooperative public utilities, private investor-owned utilities, and data center developers.
- Lead the preparation of proposals, responses to requests for proposals (RFPs), and client presentations for new project opportunities, ensuring alignment with client requirements and company capabilities.
- Collaborate closely with estimating, operations, construction management, and engineering teams to support pre-construction efforts and ensure accurate scopes, schedules, and pricing.
- Attend client meetings, trade shows, industry conferences, and networking events to represent the company and expand brand visibility within the power utility and data center markets.
- Track and analyze market developments, customer trends, and competitor activities to refine pursuit strategies and inform account planning.
- Maintain and update customer relationship management (CRM) systems, such as Salesforce, and provide regular, accurate reports on the sales pipeline, performance metrics, and forecasted opportunities.
- Drive and support contract negotiations, working to secure favorable terms while ensuring a seamless handoff of awarded projects to construction and operations teams.
- Develop and execute strategic account and territory plans designed to achieve revenue and margin targets, including setting goals, tracking progress, and adjusting tactics as needed.
- Generate leads through networking, research, and outreach, and convert those leads into long-term client relationships and awarded projects.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve proposal development processes, sales tools, and messaging for technical sales opportunities.
- Leverage knowledge of utility construction, utility design, and municipal engineering to position the company effectively for complex electrical infrastructure projects.
- Support internal and external stakeholders by providing insights on fault testing, data center requirements, and other technical aspects relevant to electrical power construction.
- Contribute to profit and loss (P&L) performance by targeting projects that align with financial goals and managing opportunities through the full business development lifecycle.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in business development, sales, or client management within the Electrical Construction Utility sector.
- Proven experience driving client growth into large power companies, including major utilities in the power and energy sector.
- Demonstrated strong understanding of electrical infrastructure projects, including transmission lines, distribution systems, and substations.
- Proven ability to generate leads, develop new business, and close deals in a technical sales environment.
- Experience working with public utilities such as cooperatives and municipal utilities, as well as private investor-owned utilities.
- Strong experience in new business development and lead generation within the power utility or electrical construction industry.
- Solid understanding of utility construction, utility design, and municipal engineering concepts as they relate to power infrastructure projects.
- Experience collaborating with construction, construction management, operations management, and engineering management teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear and persuasive presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong negotiation skills with a track record of successfully driving contract discussions to closure.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize multiple opportunities and accounts.
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently to visit clients, attend trade shows, and participate in networking events as required.
- Proficiency in CRM tools, such as Salesforce, for managing accounts, opportunities, and sales activities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience using proposal development tools and processes to create professional, client-focused submissions.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.
- Experience in project development or project management within the electrical power or utility construction industry.
- Experience in fault testing, data center projects, or related technical environments.
- Familiarity with profit and loss (P&L) concepts and the financial drivers of construction and utility projects.
- Experience representing an organization at trade shows, industry events, and professional networking functions.
- Comfort working across cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, and construction management, to support pre-construction and project pursuit.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain detailed records in CRM systems and track multiple pursuits simultaneously.
- Motivated, results-oriented mindset with a focus on meeting or exceeding revenue and margin targets.
- Sales incentives available, with a portion of compensation allocated for bonuses based on achievement of defined metrics.

Work Environment
This position operates in a remote/hybrid work environment, combining home-based work with time spent in the company’s office located in the Altamonte Springs area. The role requires significant travel to new and existing client sites, trade shows, and networking events, often across a broad geographic territory. Work is highly collaborative and involves frequent interaction with internal teams in estimating, operations, and engineering, as well as external stakeholders in the utility and data center sectors. The position relies on regular use of CRM systems such as Salesforce, Microsoft Office Suite, and proposal development tools to manage opportunities and prepare client-facing materials. The environment is fast-paced and goal-oriented, with clear sales metrics and incentives tied to performance. Business attire is typically expected when meeting with clients, attending trade shows, or representing the company at industry events, while office and remote work may allow for more flexible professional dress.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $160000.00 - $185000.00/yr.
