Job Title: Fiber Installation Technician – Data Center
Job Description
This role focuses on installing and routing fiber optic cabling and pathway systems such as innerduct, MaxCell, and microfiber within a fast-paced, high-security data center environment in Cedar Rapids, IA. You will oversee and perform fiber installation activities across the data center campus and underground pathways, ensuring all work meets strict safety, quality, and documentation standards while supporting large-scale data center projects.
Responsibilities
- Install and route fiber optic cable, innerduct, conduit, and related pathway systems throughout the data center campus and underground infrastructure.
- Manage and guide installation crews to complete fiber routing and cable pulling tasks safely and efficiently.
- Safely pull, secure, and terminate cabling through manholes, handholes, cable vaults, and conduit systems.
- Read and interpret cable maps, riser diagrams, construction drawings, and work instructions to plan and execute installations.
- Ensure all fiber installations meet company standards, industry best practices, and applicable safety requirements.
- Label fiber runs and pathway systems accurately and maintain clear, organized documentation of completed work.
- Conduct basic quality inspections and quality control checks on installed cabling and pathways.
- Apply proper cable handling techniques, including managing pulling tension, bend radius, and cable management to protect fiber integrity.
- Collaborate closely with project teams, including installers, splicers, and construction crews, to meet project timelines and milestones.
- Follow strict safety protocols when working in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, and outdoor environments.
- Maintain site cleanliness and organization in work areas, ensuring pathways and equipment are kept neat and hazard-free.
- Use appropriate cable pulling tools and equipment to complete installations in innerduct, MaxCell, and other pathway systems.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of fiber installation experience, preferably in outside plant (OSP) or data center environments.
- Hands-on experience installing, pulling, and routing fiber optic cable in conduit, innerduct, and pathway systems such as MaxCell.
- Ability to read and interpret cable maps, riser diagrams, and construction drawings.
- Strong understanding of cable handling principles, including pulling tension, bend radius, and proper cable management.
- Experience using cable pulling tools and working within pathway systems like innerduct and MaxCell.
- Capability to work safely in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, manholes, and other restricted areas.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, climbing, and lifting throughout the workday.
- Commitment to following strict safety protocols and quality control procedures.
- Valid driver’s license.

- Experience in data center environments or large-scale fiber infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with quality inspection and quality control practices for cabling installations.
- Comfort working both indoors in data halls and outdoors in campus and underground pathway areas.

Work Environment
This position is based in a fast-paced, high-security data center environment in Cedar Rapids, IA, requiring badge access and compliance with site security procedures. Work is a mix of indoor tasks in data halls and mechanical rooms and outdoor activities across the campus and underground pathway systems. You will regularly access cable vaults, manholes, handholes, and confined spaces, following strict safety protocols at all times. The role is physically active, involving frequent standing, climbing, and lifting throughout the day. The schedule averages around 50 hours per week, with overtime as needed to meet project timelines, and outdoor work may occur in varying weather conditions. You work closely with installers, splicers, and construction crews in a team-oriented setting, with strong emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and organized work areas; standard work attire appropriate for industrial and construction-style environments is expected.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $45.00/hr.
