Job Title: Fitter
Job Description
This role focuses on reading and interpreting blueprints, laying out and fitting steel components, and preparing materials for welding in a custom fabrication environment. You ensure that metal structures are accurately assembled according to specifications and meet quality and dimensional standards.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints accurately to perform layout and fit-up of steel components.
- Lay out, align, and fit metal parts prior to welding, ensuring precise assembly according to drawings.
- Use measuring tools such as tape measures, gauges, squares, and calipers to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Prepare materials for fabrication by cutting, grinding, beveling, and cleaning surfaces to ready them for welding.
- Position, clamp, and secure parts to maintain correct alignment during welding and assembly.
- Inspect fit-ups and completed assemblies to confirm they meet quality, structural, and dimensional requirements.
- Collaborate with welders and fabricators to complete custom projects based on client specifications.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and follow safe work practices in the shop.
Essential Skills
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, including passing a blueprint reading test.
- 3–5 years of experience as a fitter working with steel structures and assemblies.
- Proficiency in fitting, aligning, and preparing metal components for welding and assembly.
- Hands-on experience in a custom weld or fabrication shop environment.
- Experience with MIG welding and flux core welding in structural applications.
- Skilled in using hand tools and measuring devices such as tape measures, gauges, squares, and calipers.
- Ability to inspect and verify fit-ups and assemblies to meet quality and dimensional standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a custom fabrication and welding shop.
- TIG welding experience is a major plus but not required.
- Comfort working with a variety of hand and power tools used in fabrication.
- Attention to detail and strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small shop team.

Work Environment
This role is based in a small custom fabrication and welding shop that focuses on made-to-order projects. The position operates on first shift, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The environment is not climate controlled and can be dusty and loud at times due to fabrication and welding activities. You work with steel structures and use equipment such as welding machines (including MIG and flux core), grinders, cutting tools, and a range of measuring instruments and hand tools. Appropriate work attire includes durable clothing and footwear suitable for a fabrication and welding shop setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Albany, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
