Job Title: Sorter
Job Description
The Sorter monitors corn as it moves along a conveyor system and removes any product that does not meet quality standards. This role involves a mix of standing and seated work, careful visual inspection of corn, and consistent attention to detail to ensure only viable product continues through the production process. The position requires working in a dusty, nontemperature-controlled environment and following strict site rules to protect product quality and safety.
Responsibilities
- Monitor corn traveling on conveyor belts and visually inspect each piece to ensure it meets quality standards.
- Identify and remove discolored, rotten, contaminated, or non-corn items from the conveyor and place them in the discard pile.
- Pull any corn that still has husks attached and route it to the re-work area for de-husking.
- Perform sorting tasks while standing on ergonomic mats or seated on a stool, maintaining focus on moving belts for extended periods.
- Walk up and down stairs as needed to access work areas and equipment safely.
- Follow all safety and site rules, including strict adherence to the tobacco-free policy at all times on the worksite.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including assisting with general production tasks such as packing, bagging, cleaning, sorting, tagging, and basic quality checks as needed.
Essential Skills
- Ability to visually inspect corn and distinguish colors accurately; must not be colorblind.
- Capability to stand for long periods while monitoring moving conveyor belts.
- Ability to climb stairs as required to access work areas.
- Proficiency in speaking and reading English to understand instructions, safety information, and production requirements.
- Comfort working in a dusty, nontemperature-controlled environment with potential exposure to corn husk particles, insecticides, and airborne allergens.
- Willingness and ability to adhere strictly to a tobacco-free workplace policy, including all forms of smoking and smokeless products.
- Reliability in attendance and punctuality to support consistent production operations.
- No formal education required, making this role accessible to candidates with varied educational backgrounds.
Why Work Here?
The workplace offers a clear path for growth, providing motivated employees with the opportunity to transition into more advanced general operator roles based on reliable attendance and strong performance. You join a team that values consistency, safety, and quality, and you gain hands-on experience in a production environment with structured training and support. The role offers stable, predictable hours and the chance to build a solid work history while learning essential skills in manufacturing and quality control.
Work Environment
The role primarily operates on second shift, currently scheduled from approximately 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., six days per week, with a rotating day off and the possibility of starting as early as 10:00 a.m. Training is typically conducted over the first three days from about 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., subject to confirmation. After orientation, employees may be assigned to different shifts as operations require, and should remain available across six days of the week. Work takes place in a production facility where some areas are not temperature-controlled and can be dusty due to corn, husks, insecticides, and other airborne particles, which may pose challenges for individuals with airborne allergies or motion sensitivity when watching moving belts. The sorting area itself is air-conditioned, and employees alternate between seated and standing tasks while monitoring conveyors and pulling unacceptable product. The site enforces a strict tobacco-free policy that covers all forms of smoking and smokeless products, and employees may not use tobacco anywhere on the worksite; leaving during paid breaks is not permitted, but employees may leave during their unpaid 30-minute lunch break if clocked out. The dress code requires closed-toed shoes, work pants or jeans, and a t-shirt that covers the shoulders and midriff to the waistline; steel-toe shoes may be recommended in some areas, and employees can expect to handle corn that may be slightly dirty after harvest but typically husked and rinsed. Overall, the environment is production-focused, safety-conscious, and structured, with ergonomic mats and stools provided to support extended standing and seated work.
