Job Description
This 2nd shift CNC Machinist role focuses on setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC milling and turning machines to produce high-precision parts that meet strict engineering specifications. You will work with modern CNC equipment in a clean, well-organized machine shop, performing independent setups, program edits, and detailed inspections while holding tight tolerances in a production or job-shop environment.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC milling and/or turning machines, including 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis equipment as required.
- Load, run, and modify CNC programs at the machine, including basic G and M code editing when needed.
- Perform complete machine setups, including tooling selection, tool changes, offset adjustments, and fixture/workholding setups.
- Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, and GD&T symbols to understand part requirements and tolerances.
- Inspect first-article and in-process parts using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and height gauges.
- Monitor machine performance and adjust feeds, speeds, and tool or work offsets to maintain part quality and cycle times.
- Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues to resolve dimensional, surface finish, and productivity problems.
- Verify that parts consistently meet tight tolerances (±.001 or tighter, depending on the part and print requirements).
- Document inspection results and communicate any nonconformances or potential issues to quality and supervision.
- Work closely with engineering, quality, and supervisory staff to meet daily production schedules and customer requirements.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including routine machine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance tasks.
- Follow all shop safety procedures and guidelines while working around moving machinery, tools, and coolant systems.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process, tooling, or programming improvements when appropriate.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of hands-on CNC machining experience in a production or job-shop environment.
- Experience operating CNC mills, CNC lathes, or both.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Proficiency in using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges.
- Ability to consistently hold close tolerances of ±.001 inch or tighter, depending on part requirements.
- Experience with common CNC controls such as Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, Mitsubishi, or similar platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to perform machine setups independently, including tooling, offsets, and workholding.
- Working knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, and workholding methods for both milling and turning operations.
- Familiarity with GD&T concepts and their application in machining and inspection.
- Comfort working with 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC machines for setups and production runs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with 5-axis machining or complex multi-axis setups.
- Exposure to CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Surfcam, or similar systems.
- Experience in aerospace, medical, or other high-precision manufacturing environments.
- Advanced GD&T proficiency for interpreting and inspecting complex parts.
- Experience operating cranes or hoists for moving heavy fixtures or workpieces.
- Technical school training, machining certificate, or equivalent formal education in machining or manufacturing technology.
- Experience as a CNC operator or machinist working with mills and lathes in a machine shop setting.
- Comfort working with newer CNC technology and modern machine tools.
