Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Chemical Engineer to support our daily cell assembly production, catering to both internal development and external customer demands. The successful candidate will lead and support the development of cell assembly processes, scaling them from lab-scale experiments to pilot lines and eventually to full-scale production. This role involves close collaboration with equipment vendors for equipment selection, purchasing, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable operations. The Chemical Engineer will also optimize and improve cell assembly and inspection processes to achieve consistent product quality and performance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including R&D, production, and engineering, is essential for process transfer and scale-up activities. Maintaining detailed documentation of process conditions, experimental results, and production data is a key responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Support daily cell assembly production to meet both internal development needs and external customer demand.
- Lead and support cell assembly process development, scaling processes from lab-scale experiments to pilot line and eventually to full-scale production.
- Work closely with equipment vendors to support equipment selection, purchasing, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable operation.
- Optimize and improve cell assembly and inspection processes to achieve consistent product quality and performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, production, and engineering to support process transfer and scale-up activities.
- Maintain detailed documentation of process conditions, experimental results, and production data.
- Perform fabrication of lithium-ion batteries and components according to a strict standard of procedures to produce batteries of consistent excellent quality.
- Operate and handle mass balances, micrometers, gloveboxes, other chemicals, and laboratory equipment to produce lithium-ion battery cells of various formats.
- Perform lab maintenance tasks to maintain lab environment standards and laboratory essential supplies.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 1 year professional industry experience OR related Masters Degree.
- Experience working in a chemical laboratory setting. Comfortable handling chemicals.
- General knowledge of equipment calibration and procedures regarding chemical safety.
- Must be comfortable with operating benchtop machinery and performing repetitive tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Mandarin Chinese language skills (spoken and/or read) is strongly preferred.
- Hands-on experience with cell stacking, electrode assembly, or similar precision assembly processes.
- Experience with automated stacking equipment, robotics, vision systems, and motion control systems.
- Experience operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience designing and implementing assembly fixtures, tooling, and jigs to improve manual assembly quality, repeatability, and throughput.
Work Environment
The work environment involves handling chemicals and operating various laboratory equipment, including mass balances, micrometers, and gloveboxes. The role requires adherence to strict procedures to ensure the production of high-quality lithium-ion batteries. The environment is collaborative, involving cross-functional teams, and requires maintaining lab environment standards and essential supplies. The job may also require Mandarin Chinese language skills for effective communication.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Billerica, MA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $28.00 - $40.00/hr.
