Job Title: Field Service Technician
Job Description
The Field Service Technician builds, installs, tests, and services complex industrial packaging machinery, both in-house and at customer sites. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical assembly with field service, troubleshooting, and customer training. You will spend most of your time assembling and testing equipment in a manufacturing facility and periodically travel to customer locations to install, repair, and upgrade machinery while supporting customers with technical guidance.
Responsibilities
- Build machinery using hand tools and precision measuring instruments in accordance with detailed mechanical and electrical prints while adhering to project schedules.
- Install equipment at customer locations, including disassembly, reassembly, alignment, and functional testing of machinery using appropriate hand, power, and air tools.
- Set up machinery to meet specific product and test requirements by following established test criteria and adjusting mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control parameters as needed.
- Perform testing of customer products on the equipment to verify performance, quality, and compliance with specifications, documenting results as required.
- Train equipment operators and maintenance personnel to ensure they fully understand machine operation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques tailored to the customer’s processes.
- Troubleshoot customer issues remotely over the phone by researching equipment documentation, gathering feedback from customer personnel, and applying mechanical, electrical, and PLC knowledge to diagnose problems.
- Travel to customer sites to repair, upgrade, or modify equipment, including replacing components, updating systems, and validating performance after service work is completed.
- Assist with final assembly and integration of machinery in the manufacturing facility, including wiring, piping, and mechanical alignment to prepare equipment for factory acceptance testing.
- Participate in customer factory acceptance testing in the facility by operating the equipment with customer products, demonstrating functionality, and addressing any issues identified during testing.
- Complete all job-related paperwork accurately and on time, including time scanning, service reports, and providing detailed feedback to engineering for design updates and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and service teams to resolve technical issues, improve build processes, and enhance overall machine reliability.
- Support preventive maintenance efforts by identifying wear, potential failures, and improvement opportunities during installations, repairs, and testing.
- Demonstrate flexibility in assisting other team members and departments as needed, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work environment.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a field service technician or maintenance technician working with industrial or automated machinery.
- Proven ability to follow detailed mechanical drawings and electrical schematics accurately to build, install, and troubleshoot equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical practices, including electrical theory, PLC programming, pneumatics, and troubleshooting of automated systems.
- Hands-on experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure accurate assembly and alignment.
- Proficiency with hand, power, and air tools for assembly, installation, and repair of machinery and related components.
- Experience working with industrial equipment such as bottlers, cappers, fillers, and other packaging machinery.
- Ability to assemble, install, and service pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including reading related schematics and diagrams.
- Field service experience that includes travel to customer sites for installation, repair, and commissioning of equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control issues both onsite and remotely.
- Clear and professional communication skills for training operators and maintenance personnel and for supporting customers over the phone.
- Demonstrated reliability, organization, and attention to detail in completing service documentation, time tracking, and technical reports.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr.
