Job Title: Director of Operations – Remediation and Regulatory Compliance
Job Description
This experienced leadership role oversees a regional remediation and regulatory compliance group, combining strong technical expertise with business development responsibilities. The Director of Operations manages and coaches teams of consultants delivering a wide range of regulatory compliance, environmental remediation, and due diligence services, while partnering with expereinced leadership to expand the firm’s presence in the region and strengthen client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the regional remediation and regulatory compliance group, ensuring high-quality delivery of consulting services across multiple projects and clients.
- Coach, mentor, and supervise teams of consultants, fostering professional growth, technical excellence, and consistent project performance.
- Oversee and direct regulatory compliance and remediation projects from inception through completion, ensuring they meet scope, schedule, quality, and budget requirements.
- Provide top-level project management for complex remediation sites and regulatory compliance engagements, including planning, execution, and closeout.
- Drive business development initiatives by identifying new opportunities, building and maintaining client relationships, and supporting proposal development and presentations.
- Guide and review environmental due diligence work, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and Phase II environmental investigations.
- Apply expertise in industrial hygiene and environmental health, including projects that may require Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) capabilities.
- Develop and manage project budgets, monitor financial performance, and ensure projects meet profitability and financial targets.
- Collaborate with higher up leaders to expand the firm’s regional presence and service offerings in remediation, regulatory compliance, and related consulting services.
- Ensure all project work complies with applicable regulations, industry standards, and internal quality assurance and safety procedures.
- Provide technical oversight and strategic guidance on complex regulatory and remediation issues, supporting consultants and clients with clear, practical solutions.
- Contribute to a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the regional team and across the broader organization.
Essential Skills
- More than 10 years of experience as a highly expereinced-level project manager or director in environmental remediation, regulatory compliance, or closely related consulting fields; 15 years of experience is ideal.
- Proven experience managing remediation projects and regulatory compliance engagements from planning through completion.
- Strong experience in environmental due diligence, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and Phase II environmental investigations.
- Demonstrated success in business development, including identifying opportunities, cultivating client relationships, and contributing to proposal and presentation efforts.
- Advanced project management skills, including scope definition, scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and budget oversight.
- Technical expertise in industrial hygiene and environmental health, with the ability to support projects requiring CIH-level knowledge.
- Professional licensure or certification such as Professional Engineer (PE), Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Geologist (PG), and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
- Relevant OSHA/HAZWOPER certifications related to environmental, health, and safety work.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly to clients, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to lead, coach, and develop multidisciplinary consulting teams in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience delivering services in forensic consulting, expert witness support, construction project advisory, or broader compliance and regulatory consulting is beneficial.
- Experince working with a variety of markets and industries, providing environmental and regulatory solutions across diverse client portfolios.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with higher up leadership to shape strategy, expand regional presence, and grow service offerings.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on practical, client-oriented solutions.
- High level of professional integrity, accountability, and commitment to quality and safety.
- Comfort operating in a global professional services environment with multidisciplinary teams.
Work Environment
The role is based in a modern office environment with more than 40 employees located in a Columbia Gateway office and offers a hybrid working opportunity that blends in-office collaboration with remote work flexibility. You will work within a global professional services firm focused on integrated forensic consulting, expert witness services, construction project advisory, and compliance and regulatory consulting across a wide range of markets and industries. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Columbia, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $62.50 - $72.92/hr.
