The Civil Engineer will design and prepare engineering documents for land development and related infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on stormwater management, grading, utilities, and site design. This role combines hands-on technical design work with coordination across internal teams, external consultants, and public agencies. The position offers exposure to diverse projects, including K–12, light commercial, and industrial developments, and provides a clear path toward project management responsibilities.
Responsibilities- Design and prepare engineering documents for specific design components of land development and infrastructure projects.
- Develop stormwater management designs, including Environmental Site Design (ESD) and structural stormwater solutions.
- Prepare sediment and erosion control plans in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
- Design storm drain systems and perform associated hydraulic and hydrologic computations.
- Complete water and sewer designs in accordance with local utility standards, including WSSC water and sewer design requirements.
- Prepare grade establishment plans, ensuring appropriate grading, drainage, and constructability across project sites.
- Develop right-of-way improvement plans, including roadway, streetscape, and utility improvements.
- Create and refine maintenance of traffic plans to support safe and efficient construction phasing and traffic control.
- Manage standard to routine design tasks, including running engineering reports and performing technical calculations.
- Work independently on assigned tasks to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality design outputs.
- Supervise, coordinate, and review the work of Design Engineers and Technicians to ensure consistency, accuracy, and adherence to project standards.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members in civil design and software tools.
- Coordinate project efforts with clients, regulatory agencies, internal departments, and external consultants.
- Contribute to engineering reports, technical memoranda, and project documentation.
- Support project engineering activities, including design iterations, quality checks, and responses to review comments.
- Engage in site design, grading, drainage, and utility layout for K–12, light commercial, and industrial projects.
- Participate in internal meetings and cross-office collaboration to align design efforts and project objectives.
- Demonstrate initiative by taking ownership of tasks from day one and proactively identifying design issues and solutions.
- Develop professional skills and experience with an eye toward future project management responsibilities.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in civil engineering, preferably with a focus on land development projects.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D on land development, water resources, or transportation projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for site design, grading, and utility layout.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for reports, calculations, and documentation.
- Technical proficiency in roadway and street design, including alignment, grading, and associated improvements.
- Strong skills in grading design for site development projects.
- Experience in stormwater management design, including ESD and structural stormwater solutions.
- Experience in erosion and sediment control design in accordance with applicable standards.
- Experience in stormwater and drainage design, including storm drain layout and related computations.
- Experience in water distribution system design, including preparation of water plans and profiles.
- Experience in sanitary sewer design, including layout, grading, and hydraulic considerations.
- Ability to run engineering reports and perform technical calculations accurately and efficiently.
- Strong written communication skills for report writing and documentation.
- Strong verbal communication skills for coordination with clients, agencies, and internal teams.
- Detail-oriented approach with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and generate expected results with minimal supervision.
- Ability to supervise, coordinate, and review the work of Design Engineers and Technicians.
- Licensed Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or active progress toward obtaining EIT within the next year is preferred.
- Experience with land development projects in sectors such as K–12, light commercial, and industrial is beneficial.
- Background in water resources engineering (WRE) or transportation projects is a plus.
- Experience with project engineering responsibilities, including coordination and design oversight, is advantageous.
- Strong interest and aspirations to grow into a project management role over time.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external consultants.
- Comfort working in a close-knit team environment that values collaboration and shared success.
The role is based in a well-established engineering firm with a history of more than 50 years and a total staff of approximately 250 professionals across three regional offices. The team operates in a close-knit, collaborative environment and regularly participates in company outings and team-building activities. The firm delivers a diverse portfolio of projects, including K–12, light commercial, and industrial developments, providing exposure to a wide variety of site and infrastructure challenges. The position follows a hybrid work model, with three days per week in the office at the candidate’s preferred location, subject to internal approval. Work is performed in a modern office setting using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office, with regular interaction across offices and disciplines to support project delivery.
