Job Description
The Distribution Designer supports utility design work for electric, and potentially gas, distribution systems, with a strong focus on PEPCO projects. In this role, you create detailed construction-ready designs using CAD tools and utility-specific software while ensuring compliance with client and regulatory requirements. You collaborate closely with engineers, project teams, and utility stakeholders in a hybrid work environment as the firm expands into larger, more complex projects such as commercial developments and multi-unit communities. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a high-growth engineering organization that emphasizes learning, development, and a collaborative culture.
Responsibilities
- Perform electric and gas distribution design work for residential, commercial, and multi-unit development projects in alignment with utility standards and regulations.
- Execute distribution design tasks within PEPCO’s proprietary systems and standards, including PEPCO and GWD (Geographic Work Designer).
- Use MicroStation or similar CAD software to produce accurate, construction-ready designs and drawings for utility projects.
- Apply GWD (Geographic Work Designer) and AS8 (Asset Suite 8) to support and document distribution design activities, where applicable.
- Ensure all designs comply with client requirements, regulatory guidelines, and internal quality standards.
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and utility stakeholders to clarify requirements, resolve design issues, and support project delivery.
- Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams to provide updates, address questions, and support project objectives.
- Manage your workload independently, prioritize tasks, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced, hybrid work environment.
- Review and verify design accuracy, making corrections and improvements with minimal oversight.
- Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented culture by participating in meetings, sharing knowledge, and supporting continuous improvement in design processes.
- 2–5 years of utility distribution design experience, preferably supporting electric and gas distribution projects.
- Hands-on experience with PEPCO projects and familiarity with PEPCO standards and processes.
- Experience using GWD (Geographic Work Designer) for utility distribution design.
- Proficiency in MicroStation or similar CAD software for developing construction-ready utility designs and drawings.
- Ability to work independently, manage workload effectively, and deliver accurate work without heavy oversight.
- Strong reliability and work ethic, with a focus on quality and consistency in a hybrid work setting.
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with clients, engineers, and project teams.
- Solid problem-solving skills to resolve design issues and support project delivery.
- Utility distribution design experience for residential and commercial development projects.
- Associate degree is a plus.
- Experience with AS8 (Asset Suite 8) or similar asset management systems.
- Experience with gas utility design in addition to electric distribution design.
- Familiarity with client communication and stakeholder coordination in an engineering or utility context.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, growth-driven engineering environment.
- Interest in ongoing learning and professional development within utility design and engineering.
This role operates in a hybrid work environment with a schedule of three days in the office and two days remote each week. The primary office is located in White Marsh, MD, with the potential for a future satellite office near PEPCO territory. You join a team-oriented culture that emphasizes accountability, performance, and collaboration, supported by company events and engagement activities. The environment is fast-paced and growth-driven, offering opportunities to work on increasingly complex projects. The organization provides competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, and various office perks, within a professional office setting that supports both in-person and remote collaboration using modern engineering and design tools.
