Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team and help design and develop complex electromechanical instrument systems. This role involves designing systems with intricate mechanisms such as linear actuators, rotational devices, hatches, lids, motion control, and electric motors. The candidate will work as a lead in the design and development of new instrument hardware and mechatronics systems, regularly utilizing Solidworks 3D CAD program for blank slate designs.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of new instrument hardware and mechatronics systems.
- Utilize Solidworks 3D CAD program for 3D design and development of complex mechanical systems.
- Design systems of precision mechanisms, motion control, and complex assemblies that include machined, molded, and sheet-metal components.
- Define goals and objectives for the development of new hardware and the support of existing instrumentation.
- Perform various mechanical analyses including thermal analysis, stress analysis, fluid flow analysis using tools such as COMSOL or similar multi-physics software.
- Lead the mechanical design, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting of new instrumentation designs.
- Provide overall guidance in all phases of product development including feasibility, requirements and specification development, planning, design, verification, validation, transfer to manufacturing, and lifecycle support in conformance with ISO and FDA cGMP processes.
- Oversee the planning, design, build, and testing of manufacturing test fixtures to support production.
Essential Skills
- Experience with blank sheet design of complex mechanical/electromechanical/mechanisms driven systems.
- Experience driving a product from design to delivery as a finished product.
- Experience working with multi-system products (mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, optical, fluidic, software, etc.).
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software, preferably Solidworks, but other packages (NX, CREO, AutoCAD, etc.) are acceptable if willing to learn Solidworks.
- Experience with mechanisms/mechatronics design on systems that could include linear actuators, gears, rotational elements, latches, motion control systems, electric motors, control systems, automation, robotics, etc.
- Experience in the design and development of electromechanical hardware and/or instruments used in commercial or laboratory spaces and manufactured at larger scales/volume.
- Experience taking a product from design to market.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- At least 10-20 years of relevant experience.
- Experience with high reliability products such as automotive, medical devices, aerospace, DoD, or significantly sensitive instruments (measurement devices).
- Experience with DFX (Design for X) with a focus on manufacturability.
- Experience with systems manufactured at higher volumes.
- Experience working through different phases of prototyping for new designs.
- Experience with fluidics, optical systems (optomechanical), laser systems, microfluidics, etc.
- Knowledge of injection molding manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of COMSOL or related analysis or multiphysics tools.
