Job Title: Lab Technician


Job Description

The Lab Technician will handle and collect blood from horseshoe crabs and process it in a laboratory setting. The selected candidates will receive training on all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), as well as general aseptic processing and disinfecting techniques.


Responsibilities

  • Assist with the horseshoe crab blood collection process according to approved SOPs, including setting up and preparing the collection area, cleaning and preparing crabs, aseptically collecting blood, and cleaning and disinfecting the area at the end of the day.
  • Assist in crab blood processing as per approved SOPs, including all processing lab assignments such as centrifuging, pipetting, sonication, solution preparation, and cleaning and disinfecting the area at the end of the day.
  • Aseptically handle filled and unfilled collection bottles in and out of bio-safety cabinets (hoods).
  • Timely and accurate completion of all required paperwork entries per SOPs.
  • Clean and maintain production equipment.
  • Tag crabs with US Fish & Wildlife tags.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in specimen processing, accessioning, lab testing, chemistry, biology, GMP, microbiology, medical terminology, molecular biology, data entry, and quality control.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a production environment.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and carry them out to completion.
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills, and excellent attendance.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Teamwork skills and willingness to work closely with others to meet departmental objectives.
  • Mathematical and computer skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific-related field is desirable, or a high school diploma.

Work Environment

The work schedule is Monday to Friday, starting at 5:30 am and usually finishing between 4:00 pm and 4:30 pm. Depending on hours worked, the work may extend to 4 or 5 days a week. Working conditions vary from the laboratory environment to crab-holding areas. Some overtime work will be required. The role may involve long periods of standing, heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs), repetitive motions, and exposure to chemical hazards. Daily cleaning with strong disinfectant solutions is required, and individuals with sensitivity or allergies to cleaning and disinfecting solutions should not apply.
