Job Title: Machine Design Engineer
Job Description
The Machine Design Engineer designs mechanical and pneumatic systems for industrial equipment using SolidWorks and leads projects within the design group to ensure timelines and customer requirements are met. This role begins with 2D manufacturing work and bill of materials creation to build product knowledge, then progresses to more complex projects, including concept design and system-level machine design.
- Will start off doing 2D work for manufacturing, building BOMs, ect. - to learn the products. Eventually moving into projects that are more complex, including concept design.
Responsibilities
- Use Solidworks to produce machining, fabrication and assembly drawings.
- Create complete BOMs for equipment building and transfer it into the production system.
- Resolves design and testing problems on equipment.
- Perform final inspection of equipment to ensure it meets design intent and customer requirements. Travel 20% of time to support installs.
- Direct activities to ensure that design, manufacturing, installation and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
- Recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
Essential Skills
- Solidworks Proficiency
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering
- 5+ years of Machine Design Experience
- Engineering calculations Experience - Statics, Dynamics, Heat Transfer
- Experience selecting own components - motor sizing, Cylinder sizing, Servo sizing, etc.
- Ability to travel up to 20% to support equipment installations and field activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify and mitigate design risks.
- Background in extrusion handling system design or related material handling equipment.
- Experience working closely with controls engineers on integrated mechanical and control systems.
- Exposure to heat transfer considerations in machine design, including thermal management of components.
- Familiarity with directing activities across design, manufacturing, installation, and testing phases.
- Ability to transition from detailed 2D manufacturing work to higher-level concept design and system architecture.
- Strong organizational and communication skills to support project management responsibilities.
- Comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and customer expectations.
Work Environment
The Machine Design Engineer works in a collaborative engineering team environment that includes approximately 10 mechanical engineers and 10 controls engineers.
Work is primarily office and design-center based, with periodic visits to the production floor and customer sites.
Travel may be required up to 20% of the time, including occasional multi-week assignments in the field to support equipment installation and commissioning.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Belding, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $42.00 - $48.00/hr.
