Job Title: Exteriors Structures Design & Release Engineer
Job Description
This role leads the design and release of exterior structural components, with a primary focus on subframes and tow hooks, from forward model development through launch. The engineer ensures that all subframe structures meet engineering specifications and vehicle-level requirements, while proactively preventing failure modes and resolving durability, assembly, and functional issues. The position also drives material cost reduction, warranty reduction, and benchmarking initiatives, and provides technical leadership and coaching to peer engineers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the review and approval of subframe structure designs to ensure compliance with component engineering specifications and vehicle requirements.
- Own the design and release engineering activities for subframes and tow hooks from forward model development through launch.
- Resolve durability, assembly, and functional issues identified in subframe and exterior structural components.
- Apply robust engineering disciplines, including DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans, Perfect Drawing Plans, and adherence to Engineering Specifications to avoid failure modes.
- Provide overall design leadership to ensure that structural components meet vehicle attributes such as packaging, crash performance, durability, commercial upfitting, and thermal management requirements.
- Drive focused material cost reduction and warranty reduction initiatives for subframes and related structures.
- Support benchmarking activities to compare designs against industry best practices and competitor products.
- Coach, mentor, and guide peer engineers, facilitating regular information exchange through technical forums and knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing engineering to ensure that designs are feasible, efficient to produce, and aligned with lean principles.
- Document design decisions, release data, and engineering changes clearly and accurately in accordance with internal standards.
Work Environment
The role operates in a professional engineering environment that combines office-based design work with close collaboration with manufacturing and cross-functional teams. You will work extensively with digital engineering tools, drawings, and specifications to develop and release robust structural designs. The position focuses on exterior structures such as subframes, frames, tow hooks, stampings, and welded assemblies, and involves regular interaction with technical forums and knowledge-sharing sessions. The work schedule follows standard full-time engineering hours, with periods of increased activity around key design and launch milestones. Dress is typically professional or business casual, appropriate for an engineering and corporate setting, with occasional visits to manufacturing or test facilities as required.
