The primary objective of a Low Voltage Cable Technician is to execute structured cabling projects safely and efficiently. They pull, route, and terminate cables in commercial, industrial, and residential environments to ensure seamless communication and system functionality.
Core Responsibilities
- Cable Installation: Pull, route, dress, and terminate copper (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a), coaxial, and fiber optic cabling through walls, ceilings, and specialized pathways.
- Infrastructure Setup: Build out telecommunication rooms (MDF/IDF layouts), which includes mounting racks, patch panels, wire managers, and support systems like J-hooks and cable trays.
- System Integration: Mount and connect peripheral devices such as IP security cameras, wireless access points, intercoms, fire alarms, and network routers.
- Testing and Commissioning: Use specialized diagnostic equipment (e.g., Fluke meters, optical time-domain reflectometers) to verify speed, continuity, and signal integrity.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose, repair, or replace faulty cabling, damaged connectors, or malfunctioning low-voltage equipment.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret architectural drawings, wiring schematics, and floor plans to map out accurate cable runs.
- Compliance: Ensure all installations comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA safety regulations, and local building standards
Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA) and color code configurations.
- Tool Proficiency: Mastery of standard hand and power tools, including wire strippers, crimpers, punch-down tools, and drills.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, climb ladders, operate scissor lifts, and work comfortably in tight, confined spaces like attics or crawl spaces.
- Color Vision: Excellent color perception is required to accurately distinguish between tightly grouped, color-coded internal wires.
- Professional Certifications: While a high school diploma is standard, certifications like BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International) or fiber optic certifications (e.g., FOA) are highly valued.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
