Job Description
The Technical Documentation Specialist develops clear, accurate, and user-friendly technical documentation that supports the installation, assembly, and use of mechanical and electrical products. This role collaborates closely with engineering, marketing, and cross-functional teams to create installation guides, wiring diagrams, and product specifications that ensure consistent and high-quality communication. The specialist uses CAD/CAM tools, including SolidWorks, to translate complex engineering concepts into practical instructions for internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed installation and assembly instructions for new products to ensure users can install and assemble them safely and efficiently.
- Update and refine installation and assembly instructions for existing products to maintain consistency, clarity, and continuity across documentation.
- Produce accurate wiring diagrams that support product installations and help users understand electrical connections and configurations.
- Create and maintain product specification guidelines that clearly define product features, requirements, and performance characteristics.
- Collaborate with marketing teams to provide technical content and documentation for product brochures and related marketing materials.
- Provide technical assistance and support to internal teams and other stakeholders by explaining documentation, drawings, and specifications as needed.
- Work closely with engineering and cross-functional teams to gather technical information and ensure documentation reflects current designs and practices.
- Use CAD/CAM tools, including SolidWorks and preferred tools such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks Composer, to generate technical illustrations and documentation assets.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy in all documentation and respond with a sense of urgency to updates, corrections, and new documentation requests.
- Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support product development, documentation quality, and overall engineering objectives.
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience working in an engineering design environment.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, with SolidWorks experience required for creating and interpreting technical models and drawings.
- Experience with AutoCAD as a preferred skill for producing and reviewing technical documentation and drawings.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, structured, and technically accurate documentation for installation, assembly, and product specifications.
- Strong knowledge of engineering practices and documentation methods, including standards for technical drawings and instructions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for preparing documentation, reports, and supporting materials.
- Experience working with a Product Data Management (PDM) system to manage and control engineering documents and revisions.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, demonstrated through prior work experience and/or hands-on mechanical hobbies or projects.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues related to documentation and product understanding.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment and contribute to shared goals.
- Self-motivated and capable of handling and prioritizing multiple documentation projects simultaneously.
- High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and a strong sense of urgency when responding to documentation needs.
- Experience using SolidWorks Composer to create technical illustrations and visual content for manuals and guides.
- Previous experience producing wiring diagrams and electrical documentation for product installations.
- Demonstrated creativity in presenting technical information in a way that is easy to understand for diverse audiences.
- Comfort working closely with marketing teams to translate technical information into customer-facing materials.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts in clear language.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and requirements in a dynamic product development environment.
This role is based onsite in Eagan in a collaborative engineering and product development environment. The Technical Documentation Specialist works closely with engineers, marketing professionals, and other cross-functional team members to gather information and produce high-quality documentation. The position relies heavily on CAD/CAM tools such as SolidWorks, with preferred use of AutoCAD and SolidWorks Composer, as well as Microsoft Office and a Product Data Management (PDM) system. The work involves a mix of computer-based tasks, technical review, and coordination with team members to ensure documentation aligns with current designs and standards.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $36.00 - $43.26/hr.
