Job Description
This Design Engineer role supports engineering and design activities at a manufacturing facility, with a focus on developing door solutions and creating detailed fabrication drawings. You will work closely with Project Management, Sales, Operations, and Engineering teams to design products using SolidWorks 3D CAD software, ranging from standard configurations to fully customized solutions tailored to specific customer requirements. The position combines hands-on mechanical design, engineering analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure products meet performance, structural, and customer specifications.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed product models using SolidWorks 3D CAD software, leveraging standard templates, historical models, and original designs developed from the ground up.
- Prepare complete submittal drawing packages for customer review and approval, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements.
- Generate comprehensive production drawing packages for fabrication, including all necessary dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications.
- Process engineering change order requests, updating models, drawings, and documentation to reflect approved modifications.
- Conduct engineering analysis of designs to verify compliance with design criteria, including wind loads, mechanical performance, and structural requirements.
- Provide engineering support to Operations during product manufacturing, addressing design-related questions and resolving issues that arise on the shop floor.
- Provide engineering support to the Sales team and customers by reviewing requirements, proposing solutions, and clarifying technical details.
- Perform daily inspections of products in fabrication to verify conformance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Create supporting documentation such as specifications, product data sheets, and installation and operation instructions.
- Review sales orders, architectural drawings, structural drawings, and project specifications to determine product requirements and design parameters.
- Support research and development and product development initiatives by contributing design concepts, prototypes, and engineering evaluations.
- Effectively locate, communicate, and document technical information to ensure consistent and accurate project records.
- Prioritize tasks and manage expectations across multiple concurrent projects to achieve goals and meet deadlines.
- Work independently while maintaining strong attention to detail and taking responsibility for the quality and completeness of deliverables.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or a related Mechatronics field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred 5+ years of engineering and design experience in a relevant mechanical or manufacturing environment.
- Mechanical design experience, including working with sheet metal components and assemblies.
- Proficiency in 3D parametric CAD software, specifically SolidWorks, with experience also valued in Inventor or CREO.
- Strong mechanical engineering foundation with the ability to perform engineering analysis and prepare technical reports.
- Experience providing engineering analysis of designs to ensure compliance with mechanical and structural requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose design issues and develop practical solutions.
- Solid mathematical aptitude to support engineering calculations and design analysis.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate with customers.
- Ability to effectively locate, organize, and document technical information for use by internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage expectations, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
- Strong attention to detail and a sense of ownership for meeting project goals and deadlines.
- Experience with sheet metal design and fabrication processes.
- Experience supporting manufacturing operations by resolving design and production issues.
- Experience preparing installation and operation instructions, product data sheets, and specification documents.
- Experience reviewing architectural and structural drawings and interpreting project specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to support research and development and product development initiatives.
- Electrical experience or exposure to electromechanical systems is a plus.
- Familiarity with engineering change order processes and configuration control.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Project Managers, Sales, Operations, and Engineering teams.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage documentation and project records efficiently.
This role is based in a manufacturing facility environment that combines office-based design work with regular interaction on the production floor. You will primarily use SolidWorks and other 3D parametric CAD tools, along with standard office and engineering software, to create models, drawings, and technical documentation. The position involves close collaboration with Project Management, Sales, Operations, and Engineering teams, as well as direct engagement with fabrication activities through daily product inspections. You can expect a project-driven setting where multiple assignments run concurrently, requiring effective time management and coordination. The work environment emphasizes precision, adherence to engineering and structural criteria, and clear communication across departments to ensure that designs are manufacturable, compliant, and aligned with customer expectations.
