Job Title: Traveling Construction Mechanic
Job Description
This role performs diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance on heavy construction equipment while traveling to jobsites and customer locations in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin. You will inspect and service a wide range of equipment, identify complex mechanical and electrical issues, and complete high-quality field repairs. The position requires extensive travel, hands-on technical expertise, and clear communication with project teams and customers to keep critical equipment operating safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair on heavy construction equipment in the field and in shop environments.
- Travel extensively to jobsites, customer locations, and project sites across the country to complete on-site service work.
- Inspect equipment thoroughly and identify issues related to mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, cooling, and powertrain systems.
- Repair and maintain equipment such as excavators, wheel trucks, aerial lifts, and forklifts.
- Utilize computerized diagnostic tools and manufacturer software to identify equipment faults and guide repair strategies.
- Complete engine repairs, component replacements, hydraulic repairs, and electrical troubleshooting with a high level of accuracy.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, inspections, and lubrication.
- Document all work performed by completing accurate service reports, inspection documentation, and repair records.
- Communicate directly with project managers, equipment operators, and customers to provide updates on equipment status and repair recommendations.
- Maintain the company service truck, tools, and parts inventory in clean, safe, and working condition.
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations while working on-site and in transit.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide after-hours support when necessary to minimize equipment downtime.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a heavy equipment, diesel, agricultural, or construction equipment mechanic.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, including diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance.
- Solid knowledge of hydraulic systems and the ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic issues.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems on heavy equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical schematics.
- Experience performing preventative and corrective maintenance on heavy equipment and diesel engines.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record suitable for extensive travel.
- Ability to travel extensively and work varying schedules based on project and customer needs.
- Ability to lift 75+ pounds and perform physically demanding work.
- Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and varying site conditions.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues independently.
- Effective communication skills to interact with project managers, operators, and customers in a professional manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience using computerized diagnostic tools and manufacturer-specific diagnostic software.
- Experience in maintaining and repairing equipment such as excavators, wheel trucks, aerial lifts, and forklifts.
- Familiarity with documenting service work through detailed reports and inspection records.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and organize tools, parts, and inventory on a service truck.
- Comfort responding to emergency service calls and providing after-hours support when required.
- Commitment to following safety policies and OSHA regulations in all work activities.

Work Environment
