Safety Manager
Job Description
The Safety Manager leads the implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of safety programs across construction projects, ensuring full compliance with OSHA and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role works closely with project teams in the field to embed safety into daily operations, conducts inspections and audits, manages incident response and investigations, and delivers engaging safety training. The Safety Manager plays a key role in fostering a people-first safety culture built on trust, accountability, and practical, field-driven solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of safety programs in alignment with OSHA and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Conduct regular jobsite visits, inspections, and audits to identify hazards, verify controls, and drive timely corrective actions.
- Partner with project managers, superintendents, and foremen to integrate safety into daily planning, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and work execution.
- Respond promptly to jobsite safety concerns and incidents, facilitating safety stand-downs and corrective action planning when needed.
- Lead incident investigations, including root cause analysis, and communicate lessons learned across the organization.
- Manage injury and incident response, including coordination of care, return-to-work processes, and communication with internal leadership to support timely and effective case management.
- Deliver engaging, field-focused safety training for employees at all levels, including competent person training and task-specific instruction.
- Promote a people-first safety culture by building strong relationships with field personnel, encouraging open communication, and reinforcing safe behaviors.
- Review and support the development of Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) and ensure alignment with project-specific safety requirements, conditions, and risks.
- Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, incidents, training, and compliance records.
- Track and verify employee safety certifications and ensure compliance with company and project requirements.
- Support drug and alcohol testing programs and pre-employment safety-related requirements as needed.
- Collaborate with the safety team and operations to share best practices, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain consistent, clear communication with safety leadership and field teams.
- Demonstrate reliability through regular and punctual attendance.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years of experience in construction safety, preferably in heavy civil or underground utilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent field experience.
- Current BCSP or CHST certification.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards, including excavation and trenching requirements, and applicable environmental and safety regulations.
- Proven ability to build relationships and influence both field and management personnel.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage crews, lead discussions, and deliver training effectively.
- Ability to recognize hazards, analyze risk, and develop practical, field-driven safety solutions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Experience with construction and safety management software such as HCSS Safety or similar platforms.
- OSHA 30 certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in heavy civil construction or underground utilities projects.
- OSHA 500 or equivalent advanced safety training certification preferred.
- Demonstrated success working closely with operations teams to develop practical safety solutions that support productivity.
- Experience conducting field-focused safety training, including competent person and task-specific instruction.
- Ability to contribute to the development and refinement of Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs).
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, supporting construction project sites located in the Kansas City area. The Safety Manager regularly visits active jobsites, working side by side with operations teams to observe work, conduct inspections, and deliver training in real-world conditions. The work environment emphasizes a people-first, field-driven safety culture where safety professionals collaborate closely with project personnel to create practical solutions that support both safety and productivity. Office-based tasks such as documentation, reporting, and use of Microsoft Office and safety management software complement the field work. Travel is local to project sites in the KC region
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kansas City, MO.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
