The Maintenance Mechanic performs continuous preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance on rail cars and equipment used to transport packaged cement products. This role focuses heavily on MIG welding, mechanical troubleshooting, and millwright work to keep plant equipment, transportation systems, and supporting facilities operating safely and efficiently. The position also involves data collection for preventative and predictive maintenance, facilities and grounds upkeep during downtime, and adherence to strict safety standards in a demanding industrial environment.
Responsibilities- Perform ongoing preventative and mechanical maintenance on rail cars and equipment that transport packaged cement products.
- Carry out MIG welding and cutting assignments, including fabrication of plant equipment and structures and repair of worn process equipment according to plant standards.
- Use plant-provided tools, including grease guns and other maintenance tools, to service and maintain equipment.
- Perform millwright assignments such as bearing replacement, alignment of equipment, and inspection and repair of power transmission systems according to plant standards.
- Collect data for preventative and predictive maintenance projects to improve equipment reliability and performance.
- Inspect lubrication for mechanical equipment, record data for running equipment, take lab samples as required, and drain and change oil and filters on equipment oil reservoirs.
- Perform pipefitter assignments to install, maintain, and inspect existing and future piping structures on various piping systems.
- Perform plumbing inspection and repair on plant equipment and facilities.
- Operate mobile equipment to assist with completing maintenance and repair duties as assigned.
- Troubleshoot and work with 480V electrical systems and batteries on rail cars, ensuring safe and effective operation.
- Access and perform repairs on equipment located approximately 26 flights of stairs above the ground floor, including machinery that supports product transportation systems.
- Conduct facilities and groundskeeping tasks during downtime, including general labor related to transmissions, alignment of equipment, and repair of rail cars.
- Work effectively within a small team to meet production and maintenance goals.
- Adhere to all applicable safety rules and regulations at all times and wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds.
- Meet or exceed company safety standards and actively contribute to a safe work environment.
- Perform other job responsibilities and maintenance-related duties as assigned.
- Strong MIG welding skills with the ability to perform welding and cutting assignments on plant equipment and structures; welding experience is required.
- Mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance, small engine repair, and general mechanical troubleshooting.
- Ability to perform preventative maintenance on industrial equipment, including rail cars and plant machinery.
- Experience with millwright tasks such as bearing replacement, equipment alignment, and inspection and repair of power transmission systems.
- Ability to inspect and maintain lubrication systems, including oil changes, filter changes, and data recording for running equipment.
- Knowledge of 480V electrical systems and the ability to troubleshoot batteries on rail cars safely.
- Capability to perform pipefitting work on various piping systems, including installation, maintenance, and inspection.
- Ability to perform plumbing inspection and repair on plant equipment and facilities.
- Comfort working in a warehouse and industrial environment that involves manual labor and general labor tasks.
- Physical ability to climb and descend multiple flights of stairs to access elevated equipment and perform maintenance.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship, ensuring high-quality repairs and maintenance.
- Ability to operate mobile equipment to assist with maintenance activities.
- Capability to perform heavy lifting as part of daily maintenance and repair tasks.
- Ability to work cooperatively within a small team to achieve production and maintenance objectives.
- Experience in a warehouse or cement production environment is beneficial.
- Prior exposure to preventative and predictive maintenance programs is preferred.
- Experience with equipment operation is preferred but not required.
- General labor experience in industrial or construction settings is advantageous.
- Strong safety mindset and willingness to follow all safety protocols and wear required protective equipment.
- Interest in pursuing certifications or further technical education through employer-supported programs.

Work EnvironmentThe role is based in a cement supply facility that is hot and older in design, with continuous exposure to extreme heat, cold, loud noise, and outdoor working conditions. Employees work in a warehouse and industrial environment performing manual and general labor tasks and must wear appropriate protective equipment at all times while on site. The culture centers on small teams of 2–3 people who collaborate closely to meet production and maintenance goals. The dress code typically includes long pants, a t-shirt, and steel-toe footwear. The position is on first shift, Monday through Friday, generally from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with occasional Saturdays depending on workload. Employees may be asked to start early or stay late during busy periods, and overtime averages around 10 hours per week but can increase to as much as 30 hours per week during peak season.
