Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic Needed!
Location: Midland, Charlotte NC
Pay: $30-$40 p/hr
Job Description
This role focuses on diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of heavy equipment and trucks both in the shop and in the field. You will perform routine and preventive maintenance, address complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues, and ensure equipment remains safe, reliable, and compliant with safety standards. You will work closely with operations teams to minimize downtime and keep projects running efficiently across construction and land clearing sites.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, skid steers, loaders, and a fleet of trucks.
- Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and greasing of components.
- Inspect equipment regularly for wear, damage, and potential safety concerns, and take corrective action as needed.
- Complete preventive maintenance schedules to minimize equipment downtime and extend asset life.
- Repair and service hydraulic systems, diesel engines, electrical systems, undercarriages, and other mechanical components.
- Perform both shop-based and field-based repairs, including on-site service at active job locations.
- Maintain accurate and detailed service and repair records for all equipment serviced.
- Ensure all work complies with company safety standards and OSHA regulations.
- Coordinate with equipment operators and supervisors to prioritize repairs and schedule maintenance around project needs.
- Assist with equipment setup, mobilization, and demobilization to and from job sites.
- Provide clear communication on equipment status, repair timelines, and any recommended follow-up work.
- Use appropriate tools, diagnostic equipment, and service procedures to complete repairs efficiently and safely.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, preferably in construction or land clearing environments.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, including diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance.
- Hands-on experience with hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting leaks, failures, and performance issues.
- Working knowledge of electrical systems on heavy equipment and trucks, including wiring, sensors, and control systems.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing heavy-duty mechanical systems such as undercarriages, drivetrains, and attachments.
- Experience performing equipment maintenance and service on heavy construction machinery and trucks.
- Ability to diagnose issues quickly, identify root causes, and implement effective repair solutions.
- Capability to work independently in both shop and field environments with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Commitment to following safety procedures and adhering to OSHA regulations.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with heavy equipment service practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with major equipment brands such as Caterpillar (CAT), Deere, Komatsu, or similar manufacturers.
- Background in construction, land clearing, or related heavy civil operations.
- Experience with pneumatics and other related systems used on heavy equipment and trucks.
- Familiarity with excavators, dozers, skid steers, loaders, and truck service requirements.
- Ability to maintain organized and accurate maintenance and repair documentation.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with operators, supervisors, and team members.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple repair tasks and prioritize work based on operational needs.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $81120.00/yr.
