Certified Public Accountant (CPA) – Disaster Recovery Housing Program
Job Description
This role supports a large-scale, federally funded disaster recovery housing program focused on rebuilding homes for communities impacted by recent hurricanes. The CPA manages core financial operations during a critical ramp-up phase, with a strong focus on payment processing, reconciliations, and reporting across multiple funding streams. This position offers significant ownership and visibility within a lean team and is ideal for professionals interested in government-funded programs and compliance-heavy environments.
Responsibilities
- Manage program-related bank accounts across multiple funding streams and ensure accurate cash management.
- Perform ongoing account reconciliations to maintain accurate and timely financial records.
- Ensure all accounting activities align with GAAP-compliant accounting principles and standards.
- Oversee and support high-volume transaction tracking tied to homeowner reimbursements and contractor payments.
- Administer and monitor payment processing workflows, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, reimbursements, and contractor payments.
- Prepare and support financial reporting for program leadership and stakeholders, ensuring clarity and accuracy across funding sources.
- Maintain and manage the general ledger to reflect all program-related financial activity accurately.
- Partner closely with compliance teams and program leadership to maintain audit-ready financial records and documentation.
- Support audit readiness efforts by organizing, documenting, and reconciling financial data tied to approvals and payments.
- Review and reconcile documentation related to payment approvals, reimbursements, and contractor invoices.
- Help design, stand up, and manage the payment and reconciliation processes for the program during a fast-moving ramp-up phase.
- Identify opportunities to clean up, streamline, and organize financial processes rather than only maintaining existing workflows.
- Work independently in a less structured, evolving environment while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of financial controls, documentation standards, and reporting practices in a compliance-heavy setting.
Essential Skills
- Active or eligible CPA credential.
- 5+ years of accounting and finance experience, including account reconciliations, financial reporting, and general ledger management.
- Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles and their application in complex program environments.
- Experience managing high-volume financial transactions, particularly in payment-intensive programs.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and comfort working in spreadsheet-heavy environments.
- Experience working with multiple bank accounts and cash management activities.
- Proven ability to work independently in a fast-moving, less structured environment.
- Demonstrated experience supporting payment processing workflows such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, reimbursements, and contractor payments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting government-funded programs such as CDBG-DR, FEMA, HUD, or other grant-funded initiatives.
- Background in construction, real estate, or project-based accounting environments.
- Exposure to audit readiness and compliance-heavy environments with rigorous documentation requirements.
- Experience reviewing and reconciling documentation tied to payment approvals, reimbursements, and contractor payments.
- Ability to design, clean up, and organize financial processes and controls, not just maintain existing structures.
- Interest in working on high-impact programs that support disaster recovery and community rebuilding.
- Comfort collaborating with cross-functional teams, including compliance and program leadership, in a lean organizational structure.
