The Test Technician performs electrical testing and validation of switchgear assemblies in a manufacturing environment to ensure safety, quality, functionality, and full conformity of products prior to shipment. This role focuses on executing detailed test procedures, interpreting electrical documentation, operating specialized test equipment, and collaborating closely with engineering and production teams to build reliable, compliant switchgear systems.
Responsibilities- Perform electrical testing and validation of switchgear assemblies to ensure safety, quality, functionality, and overall conformity of products prior to shipment.
- Execute test procedures to confirm that all switchgear systems meet specified safety, quality, and functional requirements before delivery.
- Read, interpret, and troubleshoot electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to identify and resolve issues in switchgear controls and related systems.
- Operate and maintain test equipment, including volt meters, breaker test kits, dielectric (Hi-Pot) testers, torque wrenches, and related tools, to carry out accurate and reliable testing.
- Validate proper operation of AC and DC circuits, transformers, fusing, relays, circuit breakers, and other electrical control components used in switchgear assemblies.
- Document test results thoroughly, including any issues or non-conformances, and communicate findings clearly to engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Report and escalate non-conformances or test failures in a timely manner to support corrective actions and continuous improvement.
- Follow and promote safe electrical work practices within a manufacturing environment, adhering to all safety procedures and emergency practices.
- Work closely with Systems Engineering, Wiring, Bus, and Assembly teams to support the production of high-quality switchgear products.
- Use a Windows-based operating system to navigate test-related software, manage files, and maintain accurate electronic records.
- Use various hand tools and power tools relevant to the electrical trade, such as wire strippers, crimpers, and multimeters, to support testing and troubleshooting activities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to enhance test methods, documentation, and product quality.
- Maintain a high level of attention to detail and quality workmanship while managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced factory environment.
- Proficient understanding of AC and DC electrical theory.
- Ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot complex electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Understanding of transformers, fusing, ice cube relays, and other common electrical control components.
- Ability to properly operate test equipment including volt meters, breaker test kits, dielectric (Hi-Pot) testers, torque wrenches, and related tools.
- Basic understanding of Windows operating systems to navigate software and handle file management.
- Basic understanding of the operation of circuit breakers from various manufacturers.
- Skilled in using hand tools and power tools relevant to the electrical trade, such as wire strippers, crimpers, and multimeters.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in testing switchgear controls or similar control system testing.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve electrical issues effectively.
- Strong communication and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement.
- Ability to interact effectively with peers and leadership in a manufacturing setting.
- Solid knowledge of electronics and electrical control systems.
- Efficient communication skills, both verbal and written, for documenting test results and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to multitask while maintaining high quality standards.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a factory environment.
- Familiarity with various switchgear types, including metal-clad, medium voltage, and low voltage systems.
- Experience with PLC wiring and network communication setup in industrial control applications.
- Knowledge of UL standards such as UL 891, UL 508A, or UL 1558.
- Experience working with switchgear or similar electrical power distribution equipment.
- Demonstrated interest in continuous learning and staying current with electrical testing practices and standards.
This role is based 100% onsite in a factory manufacturing shop environment focused on testing, validating, and ensuring compliance of switchgear systems prior to delivery. Work takes place primarily on concrete floors in a production facility, where you will handle and operate heavy test equipment and cables. The position requires the ability to work in both low and high positions for extended periods of time and to lift up to 40 pounds regularly. You will work closely with engineering, wiring, bus, and assembly teams in a collaborative, hands-on setting, using specialized test equipment and standard electrical tools to support high-quality, reliable switchgear production.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
