Job Description
The Engineering Technician performs electrical testing and validation of switchgear assemblies in a manufacturing environment to ensure safety, quality, functionality, and overall conformity prior to shipment. This role focuses on executing detailed tests, interpreting electrical documentation, operating specialized test equipment, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality switchgear systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform electrical testing and validation of switchgear assemblies to verify safety, quality, and functional conformity prior to shipment.
- Execute test procedures to confirm proper operation of AC and DC circuits, transformers, fusing, relays, and circuit breakers.
- Read, interpret, and troubleshoot complex electrical schematics and wiring diagrams for switchgear systems.
- Operate and maintain test equipment, including volt meters, breaker test kits, dielectric (Hi-Pot) testers, torque wrenches, and related tools.
- Validate the correct operation of electrical control components such as transformers, fusing, ice cube relays, and other common control devices.
- Document test results accurately and maintain clear records of testing activities and outcomes.
- Identify, communicate, and help resolve issues or non-conformances by working closely with engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Follow and promote safe electrical work practices within a manufacturing shop environment.
- Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Wiring, Bus, and Assembly teams to support the production of high-quality products.
- Learn, understand, and comply with all safety procedures and emergency practices within the facility.
- Use basic Windows operating system skills to navigate testing software and manage electronic files related to test results.
- Handle and manipulate heavy test equipment and cables safely while performing testing tasks.
- Proficient understanding of AC and DC electrical theory.
- Ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Strong understanding of transformers, fusing, ice cube relays, and other common electrical control components.
- Ability to properly operate test equipment, including volt meters, breaker test kits, dielectric (Hi-Pot) testers, torque wrenches, and similar tools.
- Basic understanding of Windows operating systems for software navigation and file management.
- Basic understanding of the operation of circuit breakers from various manufacturers.
- Skilled in using hand and power tools relevant to the electrical trade, such as wire strippers, crimpers, multimeters, and tools used with switchgear.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience in testing switchgear controls or similar control system testing.
- Solid knowledge of electronics and electrical control systems.
- Strong analytical skills with a focus on problem-solving and continuous improvement.
- Effective communication skills to interact with peers and leadership.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining high quality.
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and safely manipulate heavy test equipment and cables.
- Ability to work in low and high positions for extended periods of time in a factory setting.
- Familiarity with various switchgear types, including metal-clad, medium voltage, and low voltage systems.
- Experience with PLC wiring and network communication setup for control systems.
- Knowledge of UL standards such as UL 891, UL 508A, or UL 1558.
- Desire for continuous improvement in processes, quality, and personal technical skills.
This role is based 100% onsite in a manufacturing shop environment focused on testing, validating, and ensuring compliance of switchgear systems prior to delivery. The position operates in a factory setting with primarily concrete floors and involves working at both low and high positions for extended periods of time. The work requires frequent handling of heavy test equipment and cables, with the ability to lift up to 40 pounds. The environment emphasizes safe electrical work practices, collaboration with engineering and production teams, and the use of specialized electrical test equipment and standard hand and power tools. The role involves consistent, hands-on work with switchgear systems in a production-focused facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
