Diesel Technician Job Description (Two Tracks)
Locations: Fargo and other regional locations (ND/SD/MN) depending on role
Schedule: Full-time; overtime based on workload/seasonal demand

Position Summary (Applies to Both Tracks)
As a Diesel Technician, you will perform preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, and repairs on diesel-powered equipment. This role requires strong diagnostic testing and troubleshooting skills to identify root causes and return machines to safe, reliable operating condition.
Safety is a core priority in this role—every task must be completed with attention to proper procedures, environmental awareness, and personal accountability.
TRACK 1: Field Service Diesel Technician
What You’ll Do:
Safety First (Non-Negotiable)
- - Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout practices where applicable, and safe lifting/rigging techniques
- - Maintain a clean and organized work area at customer sites
- - Operate a service truck safely and professionally in field environments
Diagnostic Testing & Troubleshooting
- - Perform on-site diagnostics using manufacturer tools, software, and test equipment
- - Evaluate engine performance, electrical systems, hydraulics, and electronic controls
- - Interpret fault codes, test data, and machine symptoms to identify root causes
- - Validate all repairs through operational testing to ensure safety and performance standards are met
Repair & Service
- - Perform maintenance and repairs on construction and/or agricultural equipment in the field
- - Respond to equipment breakdowns and urgent service calls
- - Communicate clearly with customers regarding issues, timelines, and solutions
Field Service Focus Areas
- - Travel to job sites, farms, or customer facilities
- - Perform independent troubleshooting and repair with limited supervision
- - Deliver fast, high-quality service to minimize customer downtime
TRACK 2: Shop Diesel Technician
What You’ll Do
Safety First (Non-Negotiable)
- - Maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop environment
- - Follow all shop safety procedures for lifting, tooling, and equipment operation
- - Use proper practices when working with pressurized systems, electrical diagnostics, and heavy components
Diagnostic Testing & Troubleshooting
- - Perform in-depth diagnostic testing in a controlled shop environment
- - Use a structured diagnostic approach:
Inspect
- - Test
- - Identify root cause
- - Repair
- - Verify through final testing
Work with electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and powertrain components using diagnostic tools and software
Confirm all repairs meet operational and safety standards
Repair, Rebuild & Preventative Maintenance
- - Perform routine maintenance and major repairs, including component replacements and rebuilds
- - Complete detailed service documentation for internal tracking and customer transparency
- - Collaborate with service advisors and parts teams to ensure efficient turnaround times
Shop Tech Focus Areas
- - Larger tear-downs and complex repairs
- - Scheduled maintenance and diagnostic-heavy work
- - Team collaboration within a structured shop environment
Equipment You May Work On
- - Construction equipment (dozers, loaders, excavators, skid steers, etc.)
- - Agricultural equipment (tractors, combines, sprayers, etc.)
- - Power generation equipment and generators
- - On-highway trucks (depending on location)
What We’re Looking For
- - Required / Strongly Preferred
Experience as a diesel or heavy equipment technician (or relevant schooling/training)
Strong troubleshooting ability across:
- - Hydraulics
- - Electrical systems
- - Powertrain components
- - Experience using diagnostic tools and software
- - Strong commitment to working safely and following procedures
- - Basic computer skills for diagnostics and service documentation
Field Service Additional Preferences
- - Ability to work independently and manage time in the field
- - Strong communication skills with customers and internal teams
- - Willingness to travel locally/regionally as needed
