RF Design Engineer
Job Description
The RF Design Engineer will design, integrate, and validate RF and DC circuits for advanced RF amplifiers and modules used in demanding wireless communication, Satcom, radar, and electronic warfare applications. This role combines hands-on circuit design with extensive testing and validation, allowing you to take products from concept through prototype and into final integration. You will work with modern CAD tools, collaborate closely with experienced RF engineers, and play a direct role in shaping high-performance amplifier products.
Responsibilities
- Incorporate newly designed and existing RF and DC circuits into RF amplifiers and other RF modules to meet performance and reliability targets.
- Use CAD software to create schematics and perform multilayer PCB layout for new product designs in accordance with accepted specifications and design guidelines.
- Design and evaluate RF circuits via software simulation, including low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), switches, filters, and MMIC-based designs.
- Design and evaluate DC circuits via software simulation, including DC/DC converters, logic gates, MOSFET-based circuits, and operational amplifier circuits.
- Test, evaluate, and construct engineering test pallets and fixtures for various circuits in support of current and upcoming amplifier designs.
- Complete prototype circuit builds for RF field-effect transistor (FET) device characterization to compare real-world performance with simulated results.
- Test and validate newly released amplifier designs to ensure they operate in accordance with target performance specifications and system requirements.
- Contribute to product development activities involving 6- to 8-layer PCB designs, ensuring manufacturability, signal integrity, and thermal performance.
- Collaborate with other RF engineers to review designs, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve amplifier and RF module performance.
- Apply RF concepts such as gain, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and error vector magnitude (EVM) during design, simulation, and test activities.
- Document design decisions, test procedures, and results to support product release and future design iterations.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- At least 3 years of experience with RF design and circuit design.
- Hands-on experience incorporating RF and DC circuits into RF amplifiers or RF modules.
- Proficiency with CAD tools for schematic capture and PCB layout for multilayer boards (typically 6 to 8 layers).
- Ability to design and simulate RF circuits such as LNAs, switches, filters, and MMIC-based designs.
- Ability to design and simulate DC circuits including DC/DC converters, logic gates, MOSFET circuits, and op-amp circuits.
- Experience testing, evaluating, and validating RF and DC circuits against performance specifications.
- Understanding of core RF concepts such as gain, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and error vector magnitude (EVM).
- Ability to build and evaluate prototypes, including RF FET device characterization and correlation of measured vs. simulated performance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot circuit-level and system-level performance issues.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or telecommunications industries.
- Familiarity with product development involving RF amplifiers and integrated RF modules.
- Experience with Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.
- Experience with other CAD or EDA tools such as those in the Cadence ecosystem.
- Interest in working across the full product lifecycle from concept through prototype to final product integration.
- Comfort working in an environment focused on military and commercial wireless communications, Satcom, radar, ISR, and electronic warfare applications.
- Ability to collaborate with lead and mid-level RF engineers and contribute effectively within a small, highly skilled engineering team.
