Job Title: Phlebotomist II – Float (Essex & Union)
Job Description
This Phlebotomist II float role supports two clinical locations in the Essex and Union areas, performing high-quality specimen collection and handling while helping to troubleshoot issues, train others, and recommend improvements to workflow. You will use your phlebotomy expertise in a fast-paced environment, ensuring accurate specimen processing, compliance with safety regulations, and excellent patient service across both sites.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, following established clinical procedures.
- Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (including urine and fecal samples) according to established protocols and test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following protocol for temperature control, container selection, and labeling to preserve specimen quality.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
- Follow all procedures outlined for specimen transport to maintain chain of custody and integrity of samples.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control standards.
- Attend annual departmental trainings and keep knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices up to date.
- Answer telephone calls in the laboratory, provide information as appropriate, and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in accordance with policy.
- Assist with troubleshooting specimen collection or processing issues and recommend improvements to workflow.
- Support training efforts for new staff or team members by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques.
- Accurately record maintenance data and participate in routine decontamination and cleaning procedures for equipment and work areas.
- Update patient information in systems as required to ensure accurate records and specimen tracking.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- At least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including blood draws and specimen collection.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Strong skills in blood collection, specimen labeling, centrifugation, and storage procedures.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions with specimen tubes and verify information.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and data entry tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Thorough understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and safe laboratory practices.
- Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining 100% accuracy in specimen handling and documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a fast-paced clinical environment such as a hospital or high-volume laboratory.
- Comfort working as a float phlebotomist and adapting to multiple locations and workflows.
- Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and laboratory test requirements.
- Experience answering patient and provider inquiries and communicating laboratory results according to policy.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing departmental training and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively across multiple sites.
- NE Hiring Initiative experience or familiarity is beneficial but not required.
Work Environment
- This is a float position that provides coverage between two clinical locations in the Essex and Union areas, including a site in Bloomfield (Suite K).
- The typical schedule is Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at one location, and Tuesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Bloomfield site, with Thursday off.
This is a Contract position based out of Edison, NJ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
