Job Title: Estimator
The Estimator plays a key role in preparing accurate and competitive bids for concrete construction projects. This position focuses on reviewing plans and specifications, performing detailed quantity takeoffs, and developing comprehensive cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted services. The Estimator collaborates closely with project teams to analyze project risks, support value engineering, and ensure a smooth transition from bid to project execution.
Responsibilities
- Review plans, specifications, and bid documents to understand concrete scopes of work in detail.
- Perform comprehensive quantity takeoffs for footings, foundations, slabs, walls, decks, rebar, formwork, and embeds.
- Estimate costs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted services for concrete construction projects.
- Solicit pricing from suppliers for concrete, rebar, post-tension systems, and formwork, and evaluate the proposals received.
- Request and evaluate proposals from subcontractors to ensure complete and competitive coverage of project scopes.
- Prepare complete bid proposals, including detailed scopes of work, pricing summaries, and clarifications.
- Analyze project risks, constructability issues, scheduling constraints, and cost drivers to improve bid accuracy.
- Support value engineering efforts by identifying alternative methods, materials, or approaches to reduce cost or improve efficiency.
- Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and ownership during the bidding and turnover phases to align on scope, cost, and project approach.
- Maintain and update historical cost data and estimating databases to improve the accuracy and efficiency of future estimates.
- Review and interpret shop drawings and specifications to ensure estimates align with project requirements.
- Use estimating and takeoff software tools to perform accurate and timely quantity takeoffs and cost calculations.
Essential Skills
- 2–4 years of experience in estimating with responsibility for performing full takeoffs, including general concrete and rebar columns.
- Strong ability to read and interpret shop drawings and specifications accurately.
- Hands-on experience with Planswift for digital quantity takeoffs.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam for plan review and markup.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation, reporting, and cost analysis.
- Solid understanding of concrete construction, including footings, foundations, slabs, walls, decks, rebar, formwork, and embeds.
- Experience in construction estimation and project management principles.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail in quantities, costs, and scope coverage.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in construction management or a related field.
- Background in concrete construction projects, including structural and architectural concrete.
- Ability to support value engineering by proposing cost-effective alternatives and efficient construction methods.
- Familiarity with post-tension systems and related estimating considerations.
- Ability to maintain organized historical cost data and contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes.
- Speaking Spanish or Portuguese as a second language.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional construction office environment with frequent use of computer-based tools such as Planswift, Bluebeam, Microsoft Word, and Excel. The Estimator works primarily at a desk, reviewing digital and printed plans, preparing estimates, and communicating with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal project teams. Occasional visits to project sites or coordination meetings may be required to better understand project conditions and constructability. The position typically follows standard business hours, with flexibility needed around bid deadlines. Attire is generally business casual, suitable for an office setting and occasional site visits.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Newark, NJ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
Company does not offer benefits directly it will be taken from salary and added to total comp package
