Job Title: Process Engineer
Job Description
The Process Engineer optimizes manufacturing processes for assigned production departments, such as cups, covers, bulkan, or litho/flexo services, to deliver sustainable improvements in cost effectiveness, product performance, and operational stability. This role provides daily technical support to production, leads process and capital improvement projects, applies statistical and continuous improvement methods, and serves as a key technical resource to the department leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe work environment, high product quality, and manufacturing effectiveness by troubleshooting and resolving daily process issues.
- Collaborate with internal and external customers to resolve technical and quality concerns and provide specialized technical support.
- Participate in and lead cross-functional teams, including operators, mechanics, quality, industrial staff, research and development, marketing, vendors, and customers, to solve problems and develop new products.
- Lead the startup of new products, production lines, equipment, and tooling by supervising installation, troubleshooting initial production runs, verifying that new processes and products meet requirements, and documenting and transferring processes to production.
- Manage capital projects and process improvement initiatives to support cost reduction through process and tooling modifications, scrap reduction, and equipment changes.
- Incorporate Continuous Improvement, Six Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing principles into projects and daily operations to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.
- Support the maintenance team through data analysis, structured problem solving, and equipment reliability projects using continuous improvement tools.
- Develop and implement system component measurements to ensure operational discipline, process repeatability, and production efficiency.
- Support plant safety goals by promoting safety awareness, conducting safety audits, and improving housekeeping to minimize injuries and production loss.
- Contribute to lowering insurance claims and lost time days by proactively addressing safety and ergonomic risks.
- Maintain required Food Safety Certification and ensure adherence to food safety standards within the production environment.
- Provide daily accountability and support for operations and maintenance issues to reduce downtime related to equipment failures and lapses in operational discipline.
- Apply sound engineering practices and project management principles to improve operational stability and efficiency through robust equipment setup and design.
- Improve project selection and implementation to address long-term departmental issues and drive sustainable performance improvements.
- Introduce and integrate technological improvements into daily processes while supporting production and maintenance teams in developing and implementing improvements to process parameters and standard operating procedures.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Technology (BT) in a technical degree program, or an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in a mechanical or electrical technology program with five years of manufacturing or process engineering experience in a union environment.
- Engineering background with demonstrated experience in manufacturing or process engineering.
- Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Effective organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency with computer software systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Project, and Oracle.
- Experience in process improvement, process engineering, and manufacturing process optimization.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, unionized manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T.) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering technology, or engineering science.
- Experience in the paper or fiberboard industry, particularly in environments utilizing lithography and flexography printing processes.
- Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including hydraulics and pneumatics.
- Working knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, food safety standards, and ISO compliance requirements.
- Experience with team building and high-performance work systems.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement tools such as kaizen events, Gemba walks, multi-vari charts, fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams, and factorial analysis.
- Prior experience with maintenance Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Experience leading and managing large-scale capital equipment projects, including budgetary oversight and cost control.
- Previous experience working in an engineering department in roles such as Maintenance Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or Process Engineer.
- Experience using SolidWorks or similar engineering design software.
- Experience in paper-related processes or materials, particularly in manufacturing environments.
Work Environment
The Process Engineer works in a combined manufacturing and office environment that requires regular interaction with production lines, maintenance teams, and technical staff. The role involves approximately 40% sitting, 20% standing, and 40% walking, with occasional twisting, stooping or bending, squatting or kneeling, and reaching above, at, or below shoulder level. The position requires lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 25 pounds. In the manufacturing area, the role requires the use of specific safety equipment, including a hair or beard net, safety glasses, ear plugs, and steel toe shoes. The environment emphasizes safety, food safety practices, and adherence to good manufacturing and housekeeping standards while supporting both office-based analytical work and hands-on process and equipment activities.
