Job Title: Structural Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on performing structural engineering analysis and design for bridge and transportation-related structures, with an emphasis on bridge structural design and inspection. You will lead simple to moderately complex assignments, support construction administration activities, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams. The position offers the opportunity to work on a broad range of public and private sector projects within the New York City area while contributing to safe, efficient, and durable infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural engineering analysis and design for bridge and transportation-related structures, ensuring safety, durability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Serve as the lead designer on simple to moderately complex structural assignments, taking ownership of project deliverables and technical quality.
- Lead and assist in site investigations to document existing conditions, including bridge inspections and related field assessments.
- Perform site inspections for projects engineered by the office to verify that construction aligns with design intent and specifications.
- Complete detailed structural design calculations for concrete, structural steel, and masonry structures and review calculations prepared by others for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist in the preparation of engineering drawings and technical specifications using AutoCAD and other relevant tools.
- Provide timely responses and practical engineering solutions to issues that arise during the construction administration phase of projects.
- Coordinate design and documentation with in-house engineering staff and architects to ensure integrated, constructible, and efficient project solutions.
- Apply relevant code requirements and industry standards to all aspects of structural design and analysis.
- Support quality control and quality assurance processes by reviewing designs, calculations, and documents for adherence to project requirements.
- Collaborate with a team of structural engineers on design projects for New York City and the surrounding region, contributing to shared knowledge and best practices.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience in structural engineering.
- Demonstrated experience in structural engineering analysis and design for bridges and transportation-related structures.
- Proficiency in structural analysis and structural design, including work with structural steel, concrete, and masonry structures.
- Experience working with transportation agencies such as NYCDOT, NYSDOT, and NJDOT.
- Strong understanding and practical application of relevant structural codes and standards.
- Hands-on experience using AutoCAD for the preparation of structural drawings.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Ability to perform and review detailed structural design calculations with a high degree of accuracy.
- Strong coordination and communication skills for working with other engineers and architects.
- Capability to perform site investigations and inspections, including bridge inspection activities.
- Ability to provide effective engineering support during construction administration, including resolving field issues.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is a plus.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York or New Jersey is a plus.
- Experience with a variety of public and private sector clients.
- Interest in a broad range of structural engineering projects beyond bridges, demonstrating versatility and curiosity.
- Ability to work effectively in a hybrid work environment, balancing office-based and field responsibilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical, constructible solutions.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality engineering deliverables.
Work Environment
You will work within a dedicated team of approximately five structural engineers focused on design projects in New York City and the surrounding region. The role involves a combination of office-based design work and field-based site investigations and inspections, including travel between project sites with travel reimbursement provided. You will use tools such as AutoCAD and standard structural analysis and design software in a professional engineering office setting. The position follows a hybrid work structure, offering a blend of in-office and remote work, subject to project needs and team coordination.
