The Phlebotomist provides skilled expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation, ensuring accurate collection, labeling, and handling of samples. This role requires the ability to put patients at ease and obtain sufficient specimens with minimal discomfort from individuals across a wide demographic, supporting a high standard of care for patients and partner organizations.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and specific test requirements.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens as required.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure all specimens are labeled accurately and completely.
- Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout processing.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport.
- Package specimens properly for transport, following protocols to maintain appropriate temperature and specimen stability.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
- Follow different procedures outlined by specific protocols to ensure specimens are transported in a manner that preserves their integrity.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
- Wear appropriate attire, including all required protective equipment, in accordance with safety and infection control policies.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to callers as appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
- Update patient information accurately and maintain detailed records of specimen handling, maintenance data, and decontamination activities.
Essential Skills
- 2–3 years of experience drawing blood in a clinical or laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture and blood draws with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
- Ability to fully understand and accurately follow physicians’ orders and laboratory test requirements.
- Strong administrative skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation, data entry, and record keeping.
- Ability to update patient information and check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and infection control procedures.
- Clear, courteous communication skills to explain procedures and respond to patient and caller inquiries.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus.
- Experience with specimen processing beyond collection, including handling multiple specimen types such as urine and fecal samples.
- Comfort with in-state travel and working in different locations or settings.
- Ability to remain calm, reassuring, and professional with patients from diverse backgrounds.
Work Environment
This role follows a structured schedule of Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The position is well suited for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and in-state travel, as work may occur in multiple clinical or laboratory locations. The environment involves regular interaction with patients and healthcare professionals, use of standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, and adherence to safety and infection control protocols. Appropriate professional attire and required protective equipment are worn in accordance with regulatory and facility guidelines. The schedule does not include holiday or vacation coverage, allowing for more predictable working hours.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Poughkeepsie, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
