Job Title: Piping Designer (Remote if Eastern or Central Time Zone; Hybrid available as well for Cleveland, OH area)
Job Description
This Piping Designer role focuses on creating and developing complex piping designs that align with industry codes and standards, client requirements, and established internal design practices. You will use standard drafting techniques to generate and interpret detailed drawings and 3D models, supporting assigned projects from concept through execution. The position involves close collaboration with engineering, other internal departments, and suppliers to ensure accurate, constructible, and high-quality piping designs.
Responsibilities
- Create and establish complex piping designs that comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements while following established design practices.
- Apply standard drafting techniques to generate and interpret drawings in support of assigned projects.
- Coordinate day-to-day design tasks and priorities with the Piping Discipline Manager.
- Collect and prepare technical data and information needed to develop detailed design and construction drawings, including orthographic drawings and isometrics.
- Perform CAD design of basic equipment layouts and piping routings that are consistent with codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Develop and maintain 2D and 3D piping models using AutoCAD and Autodesk Plant 3D.
- Interact with other internal departments and external suppliers to obtain necessary design inputs and clarify technical requirements.
- Assist with field work by checking installations, identifying issues, and supporting problem-solving activities, then updating the 3D model as required.
- Participate in intra-disciplinary meetings as requested by the Piping Discipline Manager or Project Manager to review progress, resolve issues, and coordinate design interfaces.
- Work with internal resources to communicate project design intent and identify scope changes that may impact design deliverables.
- Ensure all work products meet established QA/QC standards and follow internal procedures and best practices.
- Prepare and support the development of equipment layouts, overall facility layouts, orthographic drawings, isometric drawings, and bills of materials for process piping systems.
Essential Skills
- Associate degree in a technical discipline with approximately 5 years of relevant experience.
- At least 5 years of relevant piping design experience, with process piping experience preferred.
- Proficiency in 2D piping design using AutoCAD.
- 3D CAD piping design capability using Autodesk Plant 3D.
- Basic experience in developing equipment layouts and overall facility layouts.
- Basic experience in preparing 3D piping models for process and mechanical systems.
- Basic experience in preparing orthographic drawings, isometric drawings, and bills of materials.
- Knowledge of piping design practices and the ability to produce designs consistent with applicable codes and standards.
- Ability to interpret and produce P&IDs and related piping design documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to adhering to QA/QC standards.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, other disciplines, and suppliers to obtain and integrate design information.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with process piping design in industrial or similar facilities.
- Familiarity with civil and mechanical aspects of piping layouts and integration with other disciplines.
- Ability to participate effectively in intra-disciplinary and project meetings.
- Strong communication skills to clearly convey design intent and identify scope changes.
- Comfort working with both 2D and 3D design environments and adapting to project-specific requirements.
Work Environment
This role offers a combination of office and remote work, with flexibility for candidates located in the Eastern or Central time zones. You will work in a professional engineering environment using tools such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Plant 3D to develop 2D and 3D piping designs. Collaboration will take place through virtual and in-office meetings with project managers, discipline leads, and other team members, with occasional field work to verify installations and update models as needed.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cleveland, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $34.00 - $50.00/hr.
