Job Title: Mechanical Piping Designer
Job Description
Designer oversees multiple concurrent projects involving mechanical components for natural gas, hydrocarbon, and industrial facilities. This role leads design activities from conceptual development through detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional construction drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, details, bills of material, and isometrics, working under the direction of engineers. The Mechanical Designer serves as a technical expert, supports the engineering discipline, and provides leadership and guidance to designers and drafters to keep projects on schedule and aligned with industry and internal standards.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage mechanical design team members, including planning workload, assigning projects, and monitoring utilization.
- Assign, monitor, and check design activities based on estimated project hours, scope, and schedule requirements.
- Create and oversee conceptual mechanical designs during project development for natural gas, hydrocarbon, and industrial projects.
- Produce accurate 2D and 3D construction drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, details, bills of material, and isometrics from models and sketches under the direction of an engineer.
- Assist with front-end engineering design (FEED) studies and support engineering teams with technical input.
- Check the work of and assist in training less experienced drafting and design personnel to ensure quality and consistency.
- Ensure all drawings comply with internal specifications and client standards, as well as applicable industry codes and regulations.
- Exercise resourcefulness and ingenuity to resolve complex technical and design issues in oil and gas mechanical projects.
- Coordinate with other managers, engineers, and designers to complete project assignments efficiently and on schedule.
- Review and approve timecards for team members as required.
- Participate in the interview process and assist in evaluating candidates for new design and drafting hires.
Essential Skills
- Associate’s degree or certificate in CAD, Drafting, or Design from an accredited vocational school, college, or university.
- 10+ years of experience using AutoCAD and CADWorx software for oil and gas mechanical design.
- Strong knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulations for the oil and gas industry.
- Knowledge of mechanical materials and equipment commonly used in oil and gas facilities, including pipeline and compressor station applications.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, schematics, and specifications.
- Demonstrated experience with mechanical design for natural gas and hydrocarbon projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and CADWorx for creating detailed mechanical models and drawings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Word.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and project stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and also perform independently with minimal supervision.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Leica CloudWorx is preferred.
- Experience in pipeline engineering and compressor station projects is highly beneficial.
- Experience in developing and reviewing P&IDs and mechanical schematics for oil and gas facilities.
- Ability to mentor and train junior designers and drafters in CAD and mechanical design best practices.
- Experience working in a growing organization with a collaborative, close-knit culture.
Work Environment
- You will work within an engineering team of approximately 15 people in a collaborative, project-focused environment.
- The team uses AutoCAD, CADWorx, Leica CloudWorx (preferred), and Microsoft tools such as Excel, Teams, and Word to deliver high-quality mechanical designs for oil and gas and industrial facilities.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Derwent, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
