Job Description
This Distribution Designer role sits within the Distribution Department and focuses on the engineering and design of overhead and underground distribution lines ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV. The position involves developing and reviewing work packages for overhead, underground residential distribution (URD), re-conductoring, and asset replacement projects, as well as underground cable and conduit systems. The Distribution Designer ensures all designs meet established quality, consistency, and engineering standards while supporting construction activities and collaborating closely with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Design and review overhead and underground distribution lines from 4 kV to 69 kV, ensuring compliance with engineering and construction specifications.
- Develop complete work packages for overhead, URD, re-conductoring, asset replacement projects, and underground cable and conduit systems.
- Design complex overhead and underground distribution projects in both urban and rural environments in accordance with engineering and construction standards.
- Perform field engineering of project requirements, including site assessments and verification of existing conditions.
- Identify and document conflicting utilities and incorporate appropriate solutions into the design.
- Conduct engineering and design calculations to support safe, reliable, and efficient distribution system performance.
- Program and specify protective line equipment as part of distribution system designs.
- Coordinate small design teams as needed to develop budgets, scoping documents, design criteria, and project deliverables.
- Prepare and maintain clear, accurate project documentation and design records.
- Provide engineering assistance to clients during construction, including responding to technical questions and clarifications.
- Attend construction meetings and participate in coordination efforts with project stakeholders as needed.
- Support community outreach efforts related to distribution projects when required.
- Monitor project progress and identify when objectives, schedules, or quality standards are not being met.
- Initiate corrective actions to address project issues and help ensure successful delivery.
- Interpret applicable codes and regulations and apply them to distribution design projects.
- Develop and contribute to standards and best practices for construction and design projects.
- Promote engineering professionalism, consistency, and adherence to established standards across all project work.
- Develop, recommend, and help implement project plans by establishing goals, objectives, schedules, resource needs, and technical requirements for complex engineering efforts.
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
- At least 2+ years of experience in utility, telecommunications, joint use, or make-ready design.
- Hands-on experience with utility distribution design, including overhead and underground systems.
- Experience with joint use and make-ready design for utility or telecom infrastructure.
- Experience performing pole loading analysis and telecom attachment design.
- Proficiency with pole loading analysis tools such as SPIDACalc, DDS, or similar software.
- Familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD and MicroStation, or comparable utility design platforms.
- Ability to design and review distribution lines ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV.
- Capability to develop complete work packages for overhead, URD, re-conductoring, and asset replacement projects.
- Skill in identifying conflicting utilities and integrating solutions into design packages.
- Ability to perform engineering and design calculations for distribution systems.
- Experience programming or specifying protective line equipment.
- Strong understanding of codes, regulations, and standards related to utility distribution design.
- Ability to coordinate with small design teams and contribute to project budgeting and scoping.
- Strong communication skills to support clients during construction and participate in meetings and coordination efforts.
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality and consistency in design deliverables.
- Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related technical field is preferred.
- Technical training, certifications, or coursework related to utility design, telecommunications, CAD, or electric utility infrastructure are advantageous.
- Experience with joint use or make-ready projects supporting electric utilities or telecommunications providers is preferred.
- Familiarity with utility design platforms beyond AutoCAD and MicroStation is beneficial.
- Experience with programs similar to SPIDACalc and DDS for pole loading analysis is preferred.
- Ability to interpret and develop construction standards and contribute to engineering best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to establish project goals, objectives, and requirements for complex engineering projects.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of New Albany, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
