Job Title: Furnace Operator $30/hr
Job Description
The Furnace Operator supports the full casting process by preparing molds, operating melting and pouring equipment, and handling cast parts through post-casting stages. This role ensures safe, efficient, and consistent furnace and heat-treat operations in a foundry environment while maintaining high quality standards for metal castings.
Responsibilities
- Verify that molds are properly prepared, cleaned, and positioned before casting begins.
- Inspect molds for defects or irregularities prior to use and report any issues promptly.
- Load and transport raw materials, molds, and related supplies needed for the casting process.
- Operate and maintain air rollover melt equipment in accordance with safety and quality procedures.
- Operate and maintain vacuum melter equipment to achieve consistent and controlled melts.
- Monitor melt temperatures continuously and adjust settings to maintain proper specifications.
- Control the pouring process to ensure accurate, consistent, and safe metal flow into molds.
- Stage molds for casting and ensure they are correctly aligned and ready for pouring.
- Load ovens as required for preheating molds or heat-treating cast parts.
- Pack crucibles and prepare all materials required for melting operations.
- Remove solidified castings from molds after cooling, using appropriate tools and methods.
- Perform initial inspections on cast parts to identify defects or nonconformities.
- Handle, label, and transfer cast parts to the next stage of production in an organized manner.
- Perform grinding, sanding, deburring, and metal finishing tasks to meet quality standards when required.
- Interpret and work from blueprints and production documentation as needed.
- Operate machines and equipment related to furnace operation, heat treating, and foundry processes.
- Support quality assurance by following established procedures and documenting findings when necessary.
- Perform heavy lifting safely, including moving materials and parts up to specified weight limits.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area, following all foundry safety and housekeeping practices.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of previous foundry experience.
- At least 2 years of experience operating furnaces and performing heat treating.
- Proficiency in operating furnace and heat-treat equipment in a production environment.
- Ability to perform grinding, sanding, deburring, and other metal finishing tasks.
- Experience with general machine operation in a foundry or manufacturing setting.
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to work with tools, machinery, and production equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints or production drawings.
- Capability to perform heavy lifting and safely handle loads up to 70 pounds.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance throughout the casting process.
- Ability to work safely in a high-heat foundry environment and follow all safety procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous casting experience in a similar industry.
- Experience as a foundry worker or machine operator in metal manufacturing.
- Heat treating processes and related equipment operation.
- Familiarity with packaging and handling of finished metal components.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and correct process issues.
- Willingness to work different shifts and adapt to production scheduling needs.

Work Environment
This position is based in a foundry environment where temperatures can become extremely high, especially during the summer months. The company supports employees working in these conditions by providing extra breaks, drinks, and popsicles to help manage heat exposure. You will work around furnaces, ovens, casting equipment, grinding tools, and other heavy machinery, following strict safety and protective equipment guidelines. Initial training occurs on first shift, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for approximately one month. After training, the role transitions to a third-shift schedule from 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., with an additional shift differential. The work involves regular standing, walking, and heavy lifting, and requires appropriate work attire and personal protective equipment suitable for a foundry setting.Heat
