Job Title: Structural Welder – 1st Shift
Job Description
This role focuses on structural welding in a high-production fabrication shop, working primarily with MIG and flux core processes. You will interpret blueprints, set up and weld components in multiple positions, and ensure high-quality, code-compliant welds on structural steel. The position operates on a steady, planned workload with an emphasis on safety, precision, and consistent production.
Responsibilities
- Weld structural components proficiently using MIG and flux core processes in vertical (3G), overhead, and horizontal positions.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layouts and welding procedures accurately.
- Use tape measures and other measuring tools to take precise measurements and verify dimensions before fabrication and welding.
- Determine appropriate welding equipment, settings, and methods based on job requirements and material specifications.
- Set up components for welding according to specifications, including cutting material with powered saws to match required measurements.
- Align components using calipers, rulers, and other tools, and clamp pieces securely to maintain alignment during welding.
- Operate angle grinders to prepare parts for welding, including cleaning, beveling, and smoothing surfaces as needed.
- Grind welds to achieve required finish, remove imperfections, and prepare welded assemblies for inspection or further processing.
- Set and adjust amperage and voltage on welding machines to achieve proper penetration and weld quality for different materials and positions.
- Perform welding in various positions, including vertical, overhead, and horizontal, while maintaining consistent quality and appearance.
- Pass required weld tests, including a 3G MIG test on 1/4 inch carbon plate and a 4F MIG test on a 24-inch-wide 1/4 inch plate, demonstrating clean starts and stops.
- Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to identify flaws, discontinuities, or defects and correct issues as needed.
- Maintain welding and fabrication equipment in safe, reliable working condition and report any issues promptly.
- Follow shop safety procedures and participate in the safety program to maintain a safe working environment.
- Work effectively in a structural welding shop environment on a multi-building campus, contributing to steady, planned production.
Essential Skills
- Ability to weld proficiently with MIG and flux core processes.
- Capability to weld in 3G (vertical) position, as well as vertical, overhead, and horizontal positions.
- Experience of at least 8 months welding in a structural welding shop.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings for structural fabrication.
- Proficiency in reading tape measures and taking accurate measurements.
- Knowledge and ability to set amperage and voltage on welding machines for various applications.
- Skill in operating angle grinders to prepare parts and finish welds.
- Ability to grind welds to meet quality and appearance requirements.
- Capability to pass a 3G MIG weld test on 1/4 inch carbon plate, all the way out.
- Capability to pass a 4F MIG weld test on a 24-inch-wide 1/4 inch plate, with clean starts and stops.
- Understanding of structural welding practices and production fabrication environments.
- Ability to maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
- Comfort working in a non-climate-controlled shop environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Structural fitting experience preferred, including aligning and fitting structural components prior to welding.
- Experience in industrial or production welding environments.
- Familiarity with manual or semi-automatic welding equipment used in vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions.
- Attention to detail in testing and inspecting welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws.
- Strong understanding of shop safety practices and participation in organized safety programs.
Why Work Here?
The company offers the stability of a family-owned business that has operated for decades, with steady, well-planned work rather than short-term projects. Team members benefit from a people-first management approach, a strong safety program, and a culture that supports long-term growth. The organization provides healthcare benefits, including vision and dental coverage, and recognizes contributions on different shifts with a shift differential for night work. Consistent year-over-year growth creates opportunities for ongoing employment and development in a supportive, safety-focused environment.
Work Environment
The role is based in a structural welding shop on a multi-building campus, operating primarily on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The facility is non-climate-controlled, so temperatures reflect seasonal conditions. The shop focuses on structural welding and fabrication, using MIG and flux core welding equipment, powered saws, angle grinders, and standard measuring and alignment tools such as tape measures, calipers, and rulers. The environment emphasizes code work and clean prints, reducing guesswork and supporting consistent, high-quality production. Safety is a priority, supported by an established safety program and well-maintained equipment
