Job Title: Accessioner


Job Description

The role of the accessioner involves performing specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment. The individual will handle all specimens and lab samples safely and efficiently, ensuring proper routing within the lab.


Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry according to established procedures.
  • Load and unload samples, sort them, and check for specimen integrity.
  • Place samples in testing racks and perform aliquoting as necessary.
  • Review specimen packages for completeness and deliver specimens to the appropriate lab destinations.
  • Verify patient demographic information against the test requisition form.
  • Enter specimen and patient information into the internal system.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis by pouring off into secondary containers.
  • Properly store excess specimen samples and sort them based on category or lab code.
  • Meet key production metrics and quality measures for timely and accurate results.
  • Resolve and document any problem specimens.
  • Dispose of medical and chemical waste responsibly.
  • Maintain an inclusive environment through self-reflection and contribute to a culture of care and engagement.
  • Operate automated instrumentation under supervision when necessary.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in specimen processing and accessioning.
  • Proficiency in specimen collection, sample preparation, and analysis.
  • Strong data entry and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle human specimens and work in a clinical lab setting.
  • Attention to detail and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Previous experience in a clinical lab environment.
  • Strong work ethic with the motivation to meet performance metrics.
  • Coachable with the ability to take and initiate feedback.
  • Positive attitude, hardworking, and takes initiative.
  • Proven reliability and positive attendance.

Work Environment

The work environment is a large diagnostic lab space, central for all patient samples in Oregon and SW Washington. It is fast-paced and high-throughput, especially busy during night shifts. Shifts vary between 1st and 2nd shifts with potential rotating weekends. The laboratory is located at 4400 NE Halsey Street, Portland, OR. Contracts are initially for 3 months, with potential extensions. The lab offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, and a 401(k) plan.
