Job Description
This Senior-level role sits within a Quality Engineering organization and focuses on architecting, building, and scaling Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test infrastructure from prototype setups to robust, production-grade systems. You will bridge DevOps, test infrastructure, and hardware systems to enable high-throughput, parallel testing across multiple HIL benches, integrating CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes with Python-based test automation. This position offers architect-level ownership, the opportunity to build systems from the ground up, and direct impact on scaling advanced robotics and hardware-integrated systems in a fast-moving startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and scale Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test benches from prototype configurations to production-grade, maintainable systems.
- Architect solutions that enable parallel execution across 10–20+ HIL test benches to increase throughput and reliability.
- Develop scalable infrastructure that emphasizes deployment consistency, repeatability, and long-term maintainability.
- Create fixtures and supporting systems that ensure reliable and robust hardware integration within HIL environments.
- Build CI/CD pipelines from scratch to support automated build, test, and deployment workflows.
- Integrate test execution into CI/CD pipelines to enable automated validation of hardware-integrated systems.
- Deploy and manage infrastructure using Docker and Kubernetes, ensuring resilient and scalable test environments.
- Enable automated test workflows that are tightly integrated with HIL environments and distributed hardware systems.
- Collaborate closely with test automation engineers to integrate Python-based test suites into the HIL infrastructure.
- Enable execution of automated tests across multiple, distributed hardware systems to improve system-level testing coverage.
- Continuously improve system-level testing throughput, efficiency, and reliability through infrastructure enhancements.
- Drive efforts to parallelize testing environments and scale beyond single-instance setups.
- Support deployment of test systems internally and, when needed, into customer environments.
- Improve ease of deployment, monitoring, and ongoing reliability of test systems across multiple physical locations.
- Partner with test automation engineers, hardware engineers, and broader cloud/infrastructure teams to align on test strategy and implementation.
- Serve as a technical leader for test infrastructure strategy, providing architectural guidance and best practices for DevOps and HIL systems.
- Work in a fast-moving startup environment, taking ownership of initiatives and collaborating with leadership to shape the test infrastructure roadmap.
- Engage with Senior and VP-level stakeholders to communicate progress, challenges, and long-term infrastructure plans.
- 6–10+ years of experience as a Senior-level engineer in DevOps, infrastructure, or related roles.
- Proven experience designing and scaling Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) or similar hardware-integrated test environments.
- Strong hands-on experience building CI/CD pipelines from scratch for complex systems.
- Deep proficiency with Docker for containerization and Kubernetes for orchestration and deployment.
- Solid understanding and application of DevOps principles, including automation, reliability, and scalability.
- Hands-on experience working with hardware-integrated systems and physical test benches.
- Demonstrated ability to scale systems beyond single-instance setups, including parallelization across multiple systems.
- Experience architecting infrastructure solutions, not just implementing predefined designs.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including hardware, test automation, and cloud/infrastructure engineers.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on reliability, repeatability, and maintainability of test environments.
- Experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or embedded environments.
- Exposure to test automation frameworks, with Python-based test environments preferred.
- Experience deploying infrastructure across multiple physical systems such as lab benches or device farms.
- Background in system architecture and infrastructure strategy in addition to hands-on implementation.
- Comfort working in a fast-moving startup environment with a modern technology stack.
- Ability to lead technical discussions and influence infrastructure direction at an architect level.
- Strong communication skills to work with VP-level leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
This is a fully remote role within the United States, with a strong preference for candidates located on the East Coast, and the Philadelphia area ideal due to proximity to the primary lab. During the first six months, you can expect approximately 20% travel, typically about one week per month, to the Philadelphia lab to work directly with physical HIL test benches and hardware systems; travel will be reduced after the initial ramp-up period. You will operate in a fast-paced startup environment that emphasizes modern DevOps practices and technologies, including CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and Python-based test automation, while collaborating closely with distributed engineering teams. The work involves regular interaction with lab-based hardware systems and remote software infrastructure, providing a blend of hands-on hardware engagement and high-level infrastructure architecture and development.
