Job Description
The Phlebotomist supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood collection and specimen processing while helping to troubleshoot issues, train others, and recommend improvements to workflow. This role focuses on accurate specimen collection, labeling, handling, and documentation to ensure reliable test results and excellent patient service in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and specific test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients of all ages to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label specimens accurately, centrifuge samples, split and freeze specimens as required by the test order, and document all steps as needed.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory protocols and safety standards.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information in the appropriate systems and documentation tools.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the prescription or script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens for transport, ensuring correct containers, labeling, and documentation for safe and compliant shipping.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and transport.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control policies.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results as appropriate to support patients and clinical staff.
- Contribute to troubleshooting issues in specimen collection and processing and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency.
- Support training of team members by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques when needed.
- Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a lab or hospital environment.
- Demonstrated skill using both straight needles and butterfly needles for blood collection.
- Experience collecting, labeling, centrifuging, and processing specimens according to established procedures.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and verify all patient and test information.
- Strong attention to detail in labeling, storing, packaging, and transporting specimens to maintain sample integrity.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
- Ability to clearly explain procedures and provide courteous customer service to patients.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0–2 years of overall experience in a related medical or laboratory setting.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Experience working in a fast-paced clinical environment such as a hospital or high-volume laboratory.
- Comfort and competence drawing blood from pediatric patients as well as adults and older adults, supporting all age groups.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate professionally with patients, physicians, and staff.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone in a clear and accurate manner.
- Experience handling multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following specific protocols.
- Familiarity with specimen packaging and transport requirements to ensure regulatory compliance and sample quality.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively while maintaining accuracy under pressure.
- Willingness to participate in training and process improvement efforts within the laboratory.
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where phlebotomists interact with patients of all ages and collaborate closely with clinical and laboratory staff. The environment involves frequent use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as regular use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. Work includes standing for extended periods, moving between patient areas and the lab, and handling biological specimens under strict safety and infection control protocols. The position requires adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, proper use of personal protective equipment, and careful attention to cleanliness and decontamination procedures to maintain a safe and professional clinical environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenixville, PA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
