Job Description
This role focuses on designing, developing, and implementing FPGA-based solutions using Verilog across the full product development lifecycle. The FPGA Engineer will create RTL designs from initial requirements through architecture, coding, simulation, and validation, while working closely with cross-functional engineering teams. This position is highly hands-on, involving integration with external hardware, debugging in the lab, and supporting complex systems used in advanced sonar, weapons systems, and underwater technology programs.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement FPGA-based solutions using Verilog across the full development lifecycle.
- Create RTL designs starting from requirements definition through architecture, coding, simulation, and validation.
- Develop and execute testbenches to verify the functionality, performance, and robustness of FPGA designs.
- Interface with and control external hardware components such as ADCs, relays, solenoids, valves, waveform generators, sensors, and control systems.
- Implement, integrate, and troubleshoot communication protocols including SPI and RS-422.
- Perform device-level control and integration between FPGA logic and peripheral systems, ensuring reliable operation.
- Debug and optimize FPGA designs for performance, timing closure, and efficient resource utilization.
- Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software engineering teams to support overall system integration.
- Support lab bring-up activities, including hardware debugging, validation testing, and system-level troubleshooting.
- Document design decisions, test procedures, verification results, and integration activities to meet program and compliance requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of FPGA and RTL design experience.
- Strong proficiency in Verilog for FPGA development.
- Experience with full lifecycle FPGA design, from requirements through test and validation.
- Experience developing and executing testbenches for design verification.
- Hands-on experience interfacing with external devices such as ADCs, relays, sensors, and control systems.
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI and RS-422.
- Experience with hardware and software integration and device-level control.
- Experience with FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx or Intel/Altera.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, as required by program needs.
- Experience working with signal processing applications in FPGA-based systems.
- Background supporting complex systems such as sonar, weapons systems, or underwater technology.
- Strong debugging skills, including timing closure and performance optimization in FPGA designs.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment.
- Strong documentation skills for design, testing, and verification activities.
This role operates in a primarily onsite environment with hybrid flexibility, depending on business needs and project requirements. The position is highly hands-on and involves frequent work in lab and test facilities, including time spent at naval research and warfare center locations. Team members typically follow flexible schedules, with options such as 9/80, 4/10, or 5/8 work arrangements, subject to program needs. The culture emphasizes a results-oriented mindset, allowing flexibility in how work is completed as long as commitments are met. The work involves close collaboration with engineering teams, interaction with complex hardware and test equipment, and support of advanced defense-related systems in a professional, safety-conscious setting.
