Job Title: Shipfitter
Job Description
The Fitter/Fabricator lays out, fits, aligns, and assembles prefabricated cast and forged components to prepare them for welding, soldering, brazing, or bonding operations. This role performs precise fitting and machining tasks, follows general instructions to select and set up equipment, and ensures components meet close tolerances. The position also supports quality control by monitoring and verifying work in accordance with established procedures.
Responsibilities
- Lay out, fit, align, and assemble prefabricated cast and forged components prior to welding, soldering, brazing, or bonding operations.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and measurements to ensure accurate layout and assembly.
- Perform fitting and machining operations such as straightening, grinding, deburring, drilling, reaming, and countersinking materials to close tolerances.
- Select appropriate equipment and tools by referring to general instructions and job specifications.
- Set up workpieces and materials to be welded, ensuring proper alignment and fit-up.
- Perform tack welding as needed to hold components in place prior to final welding.
- Repair or rework parts that have become distorted as a result of welding operations to restore required tolerances.
- Monitor and verify the quality of work in accordance with statistical process control or other quality control procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety procedures in a shop and shipyard fabrication environment.
- Collaborate with welders, fabricators, and other team members to complete projects efficiently and to specification.
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of shipyard experience
- Proficiency in laying out, fitting, aligning, and assembling prefabricated cast and forged components.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and use precise measurements.
- Hands-on experience with fitting and machining operations, including straightening, grinding, deburring, drilling, reaming, and countersinking to close tolerances.
- Familiarity with welding preparation, including tack welding and proper component fit-up.
- Ability to select and set up appropriate equipment and tools based on general instructions and job requirements.
- Experience working in a shipyard and fabrication environment.
- Capability to repair or rework parts to restore required tolerances after welding operations.
- Experience monitoring and verifying quality using statistical process control or other quality control procedures.
This is a Contract position based out of Providence, RI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
